WESTMINSTER, Colorado - The Glenwood Springs girls soccer team's season came to an end on Tuesday when the Demons fell to Mountain Range, 3-0, in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Despite a valiant effort, the Demons were unable to get a shot into the back of the net against the Mustangs. Not that it is an easy thing to do against Mountain Range - it's only happened five times this season.
Mountain Range, the No. 8 team in the tournament, moved to 14-2-0 overall on the year. Glenwood, the No. 25-seeded in the tournament, finished the regular season in third place in the Western Slope League and ended the year with a 9-5-2 record.
Comments from the team were unavailable at press time.
While the Demons will be losing only a small group of seniors to graduation this year, they were huge players for Glenwood. Two seniors started on the forward line in Brooke Lochard and Chelsea Vallario - one of the leading goal scorers for the Demons. Carly Stillman was the anchor for Glenwood on the other side of the field and shined with her top-notch defense. In the Demon goal, 6-foot Kelsie Hert's quick reflexes made it tough on opposing teams to score.
Battle Mountain, the WSL champion who cruised through the regular season with a 15-0 record, also exited in the first round of the postseason after being defeated by Greeley West, 3-2, on Tuesday. Mountain Range will now face Greeley West in the Sweet 16.
