Class 3A and 2A prepare for regional meet in GJ

PEACH VALLEY, Colorado — In a year bursting with athletic success at Coal Ridge High School, the boys and girls track and field teams fit right in.

With a growing number of athletes on the team and higher and higher finishes, the Titans are proving they know how to get it done when it comes to track and field.

Now, they’ll see what they can do in the Class 3A Region 5 Track Meet Friday and Saturday at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.

They will be looking for a top-three finish to qualify for state, but head coach Meggie Kirk is more concerned with something else.

“Our goals for our athletes are to have them run their personal bests for the season and lay it on the line for state,” she said.

Coal Ridge, a school in its third year of existence and with its first class of seniors this year, doesn’t have any seniors on its track and field squad. Instead, they have a young group of talented competitors.

Chelyn McCain leads that pack as the only state prequalifier for the Titans. McCain RSVPed for state in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.40 seconds at the Rifle Invitational. Now her sights are set on getting an invitation to the 100 high hurdles, a feat she is close to accomplishing.

For the Coal Ridge boys, Blake Rivers and Colby Fauser have shined as sprinters. Both were close to prequalifying for state this year — Rivers in the 100 and 200 dash and Fauser in the 200 — and are hoping to seal the deal at regionals.

This week, Kirk said her squad has been brushing up on the little things to get ready for the big meet.

“We are mentally getting prepared for regionals and polishing up our hand-offs for our relays,” she said. “We are focusing on quality, not quantity.”

Roaring Fork will also be competing in the Region 5 meet this weekend. The Rams’ small squad has been highlighted by the jumping skills of Tyler Thompson, who has consistently finished in the top of the long jump and triple jump standings at meets this season.

Thompson prequalified for state in the long jump and triple jump at the Moffat County Invitational. He recorded a leap of 20-5 in the long jump and 43-1 in the triple jump.

Cardinals loaded with talent
PARACHUTE, Colorado — The Grand Valley track team will be looking to make an impact in the 20-team Class 2A Region 5 meet at Stocker Stadium this weekend and has a large contingency of athletes who can do it.

On the girls side, freshman Brandi Krieg has taken the 2A distance scene by storm this season. Not only has she set two Grand Valley school records in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, but she’s also prequalified for state in both events. Senior sprinter Kendall Babler is the only other Cardinal to prequalify for state, as she has guaranteed herself a spot in the 100 dash.

Grand Valley head coach Sean Rice is also hoping to add 400-dasher Emmy Adkins and the girls 4X100 and 800 sprint medley relay teams to the list of Cardinals going to state.

For the Grand Valley boys, sophomore Jared Tonder and junior Colton Cowan are hoping to make a dent in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

“They should be in the same heats and they compete well against each other,” Rice said. “They each have a shot at finishing in the top three in the 110 or 300 hurdles. Or both.”

Cowan will also be running the 100 dash and on the 4X100 relay team, which with the addition of Michael Shepard joining the team after his baseball season was ended, have the potential to turn in a very quick time.
