GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — Glenwood Springs added to its list of state track and field qualifiers on Friday, the first day of the 4A Western Slope Regional track and field meet at Grand Junction’s Stocker Stadium.

Joining a healthy list of state pre-qualifiers were girls high jumper Molly Sundeen and girls triple jumper Theresa Gabriel. Each finished third in their respective event to earn a trip to the May 16-17 CHSAA 4A state meet at Lakewood’s Jefferson County Stadium.

Sundeen cleared 4 feet, 8 inches, to just meet the top-three regional finish needed for advancement to state, while Gabriel covered 24-5.75 feet to advance in the triple jump.

Also competing in finals events on Friday was Katrina Selsor, who took second in the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 18.39 seconds. She finished roughly six seconds behind Moffat County’s Alicia Nelson (5:12.36). By virtue of several state pre-qualifying times in the regular season, Selsor had her ticket to Golden punched before regionals.

The Demons’ girls 4x800 relay team also finished second behind Moffat County (9:50.77) in a Friday final, timing in at 9:59.83. That squad, too, had already pre-qualified for state.

Friday’s action was reserved for preliminaries and select finals. Teams return to the Stocker Stadium track this morning at 8 a.m. to finish up regional competition.

Tyler Thompson and Jon Araujo picked up regional titles for Roaring Fork in the 3A portion of Western Slope Regionals at Grand Junction on Friday, the former winning the boys triple jump (44-10.75) and the latter the boys shot put (44-11.25). Both will be heading to the May 16-17 3A state meet at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo.

Thompson had already notched a state pre-qualifying time in the triple jump.

Grand Valley freshman Brandi Krieg, who already owns school records in the girls 1,600 and 3,200, added another accomplishment to her impressive, albeit young, prep résumé — regional champ.

Clocking in at 5:25.54, Krieg picked off the 2A Western Regional crown in the 1,600 Friday in Junction. She narrowly edged Rangely’s Audrey Hogan (5:27.82) to make it happen.

Entering regionals, Krieg had already posted state pre-qual times. The 2A state meet, like the 3A meet, is May 16-17 in Pueblo.

The Cardinals’ Austin Germiller barely missed out on a trip to state by finishing fourth in the boys 1,600 (4:58.71). His time fell a fraction of a second behind Nucla’s Gabe Torres (4:58.32).
