Demons hope for better day tomorrow in Glenwood Springs
Keeper will compete in 50-yard freestyle championship heat

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Swimmers from all over the Western Slope took to the Glenwood Springs Community Center waters on Friday in a last-ditch effort to post state-qualifying times.
And they’ll be back on Saturday trying to do the same.
Count Glenwood Springs High School swimmer George Keeper, a Rifle High student who swims with the Demons, among them. Keeper’s 50-yard freestyle time of 24.78 seconds was good enough for fifth place and a spot in the championship heat of Saturday’s Western Slope Boys Swimming and Diving Championships finals.
Glenwood played host to swimmers from Durango, Montrose, Delta, Moffat County and District 51 (Grand Junction) in Friday’s preliminary heats, and will welcome those schools back to the water at 2 p.m. for today’s finals.
Outside of Keeper, the five-person Glenwood Springs team will only have swimmers competing in consolation finals heats.
“Today wasn’t great,” Demons co-coach Amanda Moore said shortly after prelims wrapped up on Friday. “But tomorrow’s another chance. I hope tomorrow will be a better day for the guys.”
Keeper, Glenwood’s only senior, also took 11th in the 100 free prelims (57.42).
“My times were about exact with my personal records,” he said. “I’m definitely planning to take off some time (Saturday). Today, I was a little nauseous. I had a band trip yesterday and got no sleep.”
Keeper needs to shave roughly a second in the 50 free to post a state-qualifying time.
Geoffrey Moore narrowly missed qualifying for the 100 breaststroke championship heat (which requires a top-six finish; top 12 earns advancement to the consolation finals), placing seventh (1:16.36). Moore also finished 11th in the 200 individual medley (2:43.97).
“We’ll just have to see what tomorrow brings,” said Moore, a freshman.
Alex Moore was 10th in the 200 free (2:22.27) for the Demons.
A Glenwood relay team consisting of both Moores, Keeper and Luke Johnson combined to nab ninth in the 200 medley (2:11.71) and a relay foursome of Keeper, Cole Newton and the Moores were eighth in the 200 free (1:54.88).
