GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado - Although track and field is more or less an individual sport, the Glenwood Springs girls are mastering its team aspects.

And it not only reflected in the points standings at Friday and Saturday's Western Slope Regional, but in the Demons' relay dominance.

Throwing out an assortment of foursomes, Glenwood won all but the 4x800-meter relay over the weekend. That's four out of five regional relays. The Demons were first in the 4x100 (50.43 seconds), the 4x200 (1:48.27), the 4x400 (4:00.8) and the 800 sprint medley (1:52.86).

And Glenwood wasn't far behind winner Moffat County in that 4x800, finishing second in 9:59.83.

All that after a regular season spent posting high finishes and eye-catching times.

So what, exactly, makes the Demons so good?

That'd probably be their balance of talent in both the distance and sprint areas.

"We've got a lot of talent," said Meg Waibel, who runs on Glenwood's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Lyndsey Wesson, a member of the 4x400 and 4x100 teams, cites chemistry.

"We all just work really well together," the senior noted. "When the girls know they're running for the teammates, it just gives that extra push."

And then there are the fundamentals. The Demons dedicate plenty of practice time to honing form and perfecting their baton handoffs.

"Handoffs are a big part of it," said Allison Brown, who runs the 4x100 and 4x200. "Especially with the sprints. We practice working on it, sure - the speed, the steps. And we have good chemistry."

Fueled by that cohesiveness, and loads of talent, Glenwood's relayers have set themselves up for a busy weekend at the May 16-17 state meet at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

"(Relays) get the whole team excited," Demons head coach Blake Risner said. "Being an individual sport, they enjoy having some team aspects, both in the relays and the team standings."

Those relays were a big part of Glenwood's romp in the team standings at Grand Junction.

And you better believe not a single Demon relay runner will have trouble motivating for state. Not with their teammates driving them to success.

"Track is such an individual sport," Brown said. "It's nice to have a team sense to it. You want to do well for your teammates."
