Buena Vista discus thrower’s toss turns heads

Officials change state meet location to a bigger facility

PUEBLO, Colorado — Buena Vista’s Mason Finley is such a gifted thrower, the Colorado High School Activities Association had to move its 3A state meet’s discus competition to a bigger facility to contain his power.

Because of Finley, who hurled the discus a state-record 222 feet, 1 inch, at a regional meet in Bayfield on Saturday, the May 17 3A state discus competition is moving from Pueblo’s Dutch Clark Stadium to Pueblo South High School.

Finley’s toss, which is beckoning statewide acclaim, is the longest prep throw in the nation this year and fell just 12 feet shy of the national high school record.

A Monday morning press release from CHSAA put it best: “Although there are excellent facilities at Dutch Clark Stadium, there is a discus thrower competing in the 3A boys discus that could well exceed the distance that facility allows.”

Last year, Finley won state titles for Salida in the shot put and discus before transferring to Buena Vista in the summer. He should be a force at Dutch Clark’s shot pit as well after winning the region title with a 61-foot toss in Bayfield on Saturday.
