GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado - The region's top high school baseball and girls softball players across the region will convene at Rifle's Deerfield Park complex for the first Western Slope All Star Classic May 27.

The girls softball game starts at 5 p.m. followed by the baseball game at 7 p.m. Admission to both games is free. Ron Milhorn and Jack Jabbour will air both games live on KMTS (99.1 FM) radio.

The softball game is a new addition to the mix. The seven-inning contest brings together players from last fall's All-Western Colorado Sportswriters team. The boys fifth annual all-star game features players from the Class 4A All-Western Slope League team.

Sabrina Juarez of Central High School and Rifle High head coach Cindy Skinner have been tabbed to coach the softball game. To ensure competitive balance the makeup of the two teams will be chosen prior to the start of the contest.

Players who have made verbal commitments to play include Central's Alana Brennan, the 2007 All-Western Colorado Player of the Year and Class 5A state team selection. Additional verbal commitments have been received from Fruita Monument High's J.J. Johnson and Jessica Blair; Alyssa Skinner, Megan McWilliams and Chelsea Webb from Rifle High School; Grand Junction's Devin and Danielle Williams; Mary Margaret Shorten, who starred for Palisade High; and Claudia Tamer from Delta.

The boys game pits the squads who concluded the regular league campaign in first, third, fifth and seventh place against the WSL runner-up, fourth-, sixth- and eighth-place finishers.

A list of standouts slated to play include WSL Player of the Year Travis Del Moral of Palisade; first-team picks Chris Winder, Seth Lanier and Jordan Williams from Moffat County; along with Rifle High stars Asa Fix, Kyle Bond and Zack Whitmore. Glenwood catcher Chad Sommer will also be on the squad.

WSL coach of the year Steve Moore of Palisade and Moffat County skipper Tim Hafez have been named as the team's respective head coaches.
