Who needs eBay? City surplus sale has plenty to offer
Auction serves as the annual spring cleaning event for city of Glenwood Springs
Print Comment
GLENWOOD SPRINGS - Robin Unsworth giggles a little when she looks through the list of items on the City of Glenwood Springs Surplus Sale.

The list reads like an inventory list at a second hand store and is priced very similarly as well. A five-compartment dog kennel, a diesel-fueled Hotsy pressure washer - model unit No. 540, and a Bissel vacuum - Power Force II, are just some of the items on the list. Not to mention a plethora of used vehicles from the Glenwood Springs Impound and some vehicles that are being retired from various city departments.

The auction is an annual spring-cleaning event for the city of Glenwood, Unsworth, Glenwood's City Clerk, said.

"We have to have an auction or have to notify the public that we are selling these items so we can't just sell them to our friends," Unsworth said.

Items are sold in an auction to the highest bidder through mail-in bids, Unsworth said. A list of the items can be found at the City of Glenwood Springs website and sealed bids must be either mailed or delivered to the City Clerks Office by no later than 5 p.m. May 29.

Items are listed under various city departments, and bidders are required to include the bid amount, city department the item is under, the listed item number, bidder's name, address and telephone number. To view any of the items, people can contact the city department listing the surplus item.

Money generated from the sale goes back to the city's general fund, besides the items listed under the water and electric departments, Unsworth said.

In past years, the auction has generated between $8,000 and $10,000, according to Unsworth. She expects about the same this year.

"It depends on the amount of items on the list," she said. "But generally we see a pretty good return, but this year we've had a number of minimum bids on several items."

Minimum bids are set by the department listing the item and certain items, like the 1989 Ford 800 Series Truck with an articulating boom aerial device for a minimum bid of $15,000, which has to fetch at least that amount.

"Fleet maintenance has decided that those items are worth a specific minimum amount," Unsworth said.

Winning bids will be determined on Friday, May 30. Winning bidders have one week to pick up the item or the winning bidder will be charged $25 per day per item fee.
