CARBONDALE, Colorado - A semitrailer and a construction crane crashed on Highway 82 and delayed traffic Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred around 7:22 a.m. in the eastbound lanes just east of the Aspen Glen subdivision, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

CSP Trooper Brad Latchaw said the left westbound lane was still closed as the semitrailer and the crane were still being cleared from the scene of the accident Tuesday afternoon. He said the lane could reopen later Tuesday night.

"It's still affected," he said. "Hopefully they'll have it cleared by rush hour traffic.”

The CSP said the semitrailer pulled out in front of a construction crane that was heading eastbound. The semitrailer's driver, Mark Phipps of Fieldale, Va, was cited with careless driving causing bodily injury.

The driver of the construction crane, Ronald Lovell, 46, of Parachute, was not cited in the accident.

The construction crane split open the back end of the semitrailer. It spilled liquid wood stain and other debris.

Latchaw said five-gallon buckets of the stain product were spilled from the semitrailer. He estimated both lanes were closed for more than 40 minutes Tuesday morning. The spill also slowed traffic in the eastbound lanes, he said.

The crane came to a stop in the median facing southeast. The semitrailer came to rest facing northeast and blocking both westbound lanes of Highway 82, according to the CSP.

Traffic was diverted onto a dirt frontage road.

Lovell was transported to Valley View Hospital with serious injuries. Phipps was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, the CSP said in a news release.

Latchaw said Lovell suffered a broken leg and head lacerations, but was listed in stable condition.
