Train rolls through Glenwood carrying a message of safety

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado " Jan Girardot, managing director for the Glenwood Springs Railroad Museum is excited that Operation Lifesaver is making an appearance in Glenwood Springs today.

"It's going to be pretty neat," Girardot said. "What they are doing is running a restored Rio Grande engine with restored vista dome passenger cars for the people to ride in."

For almost 40 years, Operation Lifesaver has worked to educate drivers and pedestrians about how to navigate safely around train tracks and railroad properties.

As an increasing number of commuter and light rail systems open up " often operating on-street or in shared traffic lanes with automobiles " a new education challenge is also emerging for residents and visitors to those cities.

Operation Lifesaver's mission is to end collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on rail property through a nationwide network of volunteers who work to educate people about rail safety. For more information, log on to www.oli.org.

The program is a cooperation between Union Pacific Railroad and Operation Lifesaver with three trips from Glenwood Springs to Dotsero planned for Saturday.

During the trip through the Glenwood Canyon people will learn about rail line safety through a presentation provided by an Operation Lifesaver representative.

Wednesday Operation Lifesaver was in Grand Junction, Friday they spent the day traveling from Delta to Paonia and Glenwood is the third stop on the trip. It's unknown if the trip will continue to other destinations in the state.

Trains will depart from the Glenwood Springs Amtrak Station, starting at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m., according to Girardot.
