CARBONDALE, Colorado — The largest-scale solar electricity generating project in western Colorado is about to go live.
Local, state and federal dignitaries will be on hand for a July 1 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the 1-acre Colorado Rocky Mountain School Solar Array, located on the CRMS campus, off Dolores Way in Carbondale.
The Solar Array, known locally as the “solar farm,” is the result of a partnership between Aspen Skiing Co. and CRMS, with the involvement of the town of Carbondale, the Community Office of Resource Efficiency (CORE) and local energy consultants.
The electricity to be generated by the array is believed to be enough to power a couple of dozen homes or, as will be the actual case, a large building full of classrooms, with enough left over to send surplus watts to the regional power grid.
The ceremony will be at 3 p.m. at the site. Guest speakers at the event will be Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, U.S. Senator Ken Salazar, Aspen Skiing Company President Mike Kaplan, Jim Crown of Henry Crown and Company (Aspen Skiing Company’s parent company), and CRMS Board President Michael Kennedy.
Also present will be State Senator Gail Schwartz, State Rep. Kathleen Curry and Carbondale Mayor Michael Hassig.
Sunsense Inc., a Carbondale solar electric company, did the design work and is the general contractor for the project.
