Hopefully, Summer of Jazz controversy has run its course

This is one of those little mini-controversies that takes off like a field of dandelions.

Just like a pasture packed full of the yellow weed, the Summer of Jazz controversy quickly grew out of control.

The polarizing effect was fast and at times overly harsh.

Some parents took offense to Summer of Jazz organizer Mary Noone's commentary. Noone's message was simple: Parents need to be responsible for their children at Summer of Jazz.

The message wasn't about making Summer of Jazz an event only for adults.

Unfortunately, the situation gained momentum, and people took sides.

Hopefully, things have cooled down and there's a better understanding of what's going on.

Maybe Noone's overall message was a little too harsh. Maybe her statement that Summer of Jazz is at a "tipping point" and its future could be in doubt because of bad behavior was a little dramatic. Maybe the reaction to a letter writer's criticism of too much child's play was over the top.

There are lots of maybes here. But maybe we should just look at starting over.

Summer of Jazz is a great Wednesday night tradition for Glenwood Springs. Getting together for an evening with family, friends, good jazz and relaxation is why this event was created and why it remains popular today.

One parent called the newsroom and angrily stated that he's never been to Summer of Jazz and will never go now.

It's a good example of how ridiculous some of the reaction has been to this mini-controversy.

Summer of Jazz is an event for everyone.

Parental responsibility should be a given. Just like good, responsible behavior from all adults.

We feel that the entire situation was blown out of proportion and it's time to step back, take a deep breath and enjoy the music with your family and friends.

Summer of Jazz is a Glenwood tradition now in its 23rd year. Summer of Jazz is for everyone. Two Rivers Park is for everyone. Opinions are for everyone.

Hopefully, a little rational thought will take over and this mini-controversy will now dry up and blow away.
