No suspect yet in Grand Avenue rape

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado - Police haven't arrested anyone suspected of raping a woman near downtown late at night over the Strawberry Days weekend.

There wasn't much to go on other than the alleged victim's description of the man.

Police Chief Terry Wilson said no suspect has been identified yet, but police were able to obtain some information. Police released a composite sketch of the suspect based on the woman's description shortly after the incident.

Police followed several leads that came in after releasing the sketch to the media, but nothing definitive came out of it, Wilson said. He said he couldn't go into further detail or comment on the tips, as the matter is still under investigation.

A Glenwood Springs woman in her 20s told police she was walking along Grand Avenue when she was grabbed, forced into an area beside the old church building at 10th Street and Grand Avenue and raped around 2:30 a.m. June 21.

The location and the timing over the festival weekend made the crime seem more brazen.

"I never thought that something like that would ever happen right on Grand Avenue, either," Wilson said. "And that's the most disturbing piece of the whole thing is that somebody committed such an act of violence, basically on the main street of town on an exceptionally busy night when there were people all over the place."

The suspect is thought to be a white man of about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, 145 pounds and 25 to 30 years old. He has dark eyes, dark hair and was clean shaven at the time. He wore a dark baseball cap, a black T-shirt and light blue jeans.

Police are looking for more information. Anyone who knows anything about the crime or the suspect should contact the Glenwood Springs Police Department at 384-6500 or investigations@glenwoodpolice.com.
