Ellen Delphine Walters, 91, of Grand Junction, passed away July 29, 2008.
She was born Nov. 24, 1916, in Thurman, to Chris and Clara (Larsen) Zendner in a sod house on the prairies of eastern Colorado. Ellen spent her childhood near Thurman, and also lived in Denver, Boulder and the New Castle areas. She attended Campion Academy in Loveland, and attended Union College located in Lincoln, Neb., for one semester. Ellen served in the Peace Corps in Fiji.
She married Mark Leroy Walters June 14, 1937, in Thurman, and was proud to be a ranchers wife.
Ellen worked as a stenographer for the U.S. Forest Service and the White River National Forest for many years.
Some of her favorite hobbies included painting, quilting, sewing, genealogy, walking and Indian history.
Ellen is survived by son Dick Walters of Montrose; daughters Betty J. McDonald-Brown of Grand Junction, and Carol E. Parker of Los Gatos, Calif.; sister Alice J. Spomer of Loveland; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grand Junction, with the Rev. John Goley officiating. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in New Castle.
