Beginners fishing clinics

Crystal Fly Shop is again offering free beginner’s fly-fishing clinics at 5 p.m. every Tuesday. Clinics are 11&#8260;2 hours, and topics include casting, entomology, rigging, etc. Space is limited, so call the shop at 963-5741 to reserve a space.

Crystal Fly Shop is located at 208 Main St. in Carbondale.

Moms and babies picnic

Nurse Family Partnership is hosting a Moms and Babies picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Two Rivers Park picnic pavilion, Highway 6 in Glenwood Springs.

Indescribable music in Carbondale

Steve’s Guitars in Carbondale will be hosting Taarka, an eclectic Americana band playing high energy, original tunes at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21. Band members dub their sound “seismic gypsy hypno jazz.”

Environmentalists meeting

The Crystal Valley Environmental Protection Association (CVEPA) will have its 36th annual meeting at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, in the Osgood Room at the Redstone Inn in Redstone.

Ron Sorter will give a presentation at 3:30 p.m. at the coke ovens.

A social hour and cash bar will commence at 4 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner and a business meeting.

Dee Malone and George Newman, candidates for Pitkin County Commissioner from District 5, will present their platforms. There will be updates on oil and gas drilling, the bike path, the Hidden Gems Wilderness proposal and a report on current CVEPA projects. Dorothea Farris will be honored for her service.

New members are welcome.

Final Hidden Gems hike

This summer’s Hidden Gems Hike Series will conclude in the Roaring Fork Valley with a free guided hike to Red Table Mountain on Sunday, Aug. 24.

The moderately difficult hike will begin near Crooked Creek Pass and ascend the eastern end of Red Table, providing spectacular views of the Holy Cross Wilderness.

Poker run

An ATV/dirt bike poker run will be held Aug. 23 in DeBeque. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown DeBeque. Cash is awarded to the top five poker hands. Winners do not have to be present to accept cash prizes.

All ATVs and dirt bikes must have current Colorado State Parks registration or nonresident OHCV permit.

Free physics lecture

A free public lecture, “Extrasolar Planets and the Search for Habitable Worlds,” given by Professor Sara Seager from MIT, will be presented at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20, in Paepcke Auditorium.

Seager will describe the exciting search for Earth twins, habitable planets beyond our solar system. The Spitzer Space Telescope, Hubble’s infrared cousin, has found more than 300 planets orbiting nearby stars, and Seager will explain how we may recognize signs of life on these and other distant worlds by crossing the boundaries of physics into chemistry and microbiology.

The 23rd annual Glenwood Springs Farmers Market continues 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday through October. Come early for best selection of local and regional produce, breads, pasta, cheese, meats, roasted chiles and barbecue.

Family story time

Kids of all ages and their families or caregivers are invited to Family Story Time with Miss Eva (Fitzwater) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in the children’s room on the first floor of the Glenwood Springs Branch Library, 413 Ninth St. Join in the stories and fun as Ms. Eva takes flight with her story time theme, “Birds of a Feather.”

Free teen movie night

A free end-of-the-summer Teen Movie Night will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library. The feature presentation will be the 2008 comedy movie “College Road Trip,” starring Martin Lawrence and Raven Symone.

Food will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring a cushion or other comfortable seating. Parents can be assured the movie has an age-appropriate rating.

AspenFilm needs DVD

AspenFilm needs a working DVD player to introduce its education screening series, Preschool Pix, to a downvalley library that currently does not own a DVD player.

Preschool Pix is a free screening series for children ages 3-6. Based on storybook favorites, these animated movies are offered in libraries and preschools from Aspen to Glenwood Springs in both English and Spanish on a monthly basis.
