SILT, Colorado — A Hawaiian luau is the theme of the 19th annual Silt Pig Roast at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, in Veterans Park.
The pig roast is the big fundraiser for West Care Ambulance Service, which serves 470 square miles in the New Castle and Silt areas. Funds raised from the event go toward upgrading and buying critically needed equipment.
“We’re going to have a really big auction this year,” said Cindy Fuqua, a dispatcher and EMT for West Care. “We’ve got a lot of good stuff.”
One of the big items is a 2003 Monte Carlo Jeff Gordon Signature Series car from Hendrick Motorsports. The vehicle is loaded with Sirius radio, AM/FM radio, CD player, six Bose speakers, V6 engine and sun roof. It has 14,000 miles on it and gets 31 miles per gallon. The car was donated by Scott and Mona Moyer of Rifle.
“It’s in mint condition,” Fuqua said. “It’s a beauty.”
Other auction items include Colorado Rockies tickets, Colorado Crush tickets, hotel rooms in Las Vegas and Mesquite, the Redstone Inn, passes to the Hot Springs Pool, Elitch Gardens amusement park in Denver, a trip on the Durango & Silverton railroad, gym memberships, ski passes and more.
The auction will begin at 6 p.m.
For the kids, there will be a prize pond, a fishing pond and face painting.
Money from the pig roast and auction will go towards updating West Care Ambulance’s radios, safe boxes that are used to secure controlled substances and a new power cot.
“The cot really helps with the breakdown of our backs when we’re putting a patient on and raising and lowering the cot,” Fuqua said. “With this cot, it can be raised and lowered by pushing a button. The money raised goes toward making our company better so we can be better for the community.”
The menu includes pulled pork, baked beans, corn on the cob, rolls, dessert and drinks. Tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for kids 10 and under.
Volunteers are also needed to help serve food.
