Silt pig roast

The 19th annual West Care Ambulance Pig Roast will be held from 4-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Veterans Park in Silt.

Participants may enjoy specially-prepared Hawaiian style pulled pork dinner immediately followed by an auction to support West Care Ambulance. More than 100 auction items will be available, including a 2003 Hendrick Racing/Jeff Gordon Special Edition Chevy Monte Carlo, Vacation packages to Las Vegas, and autographed sports memorabilia. Children’s activities include free face painting and a prize pond.

Free physics lecture

A free public lecture, “Visualizing Complex Electronic Quantum Matter at the Atomic Scale,” will be given by Professor J.C. Séamus Davis from Cornell University, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Paepcke Auditorium in Aspen.

Who can imagine transport, communication, business, healthcare, national security, entertainment or science without solid-state electronics and information technology? Until recently it has proven extraordinarily difficult to understand these new forms of electronic matter but Professor Davis will explore them for a general audience.

Riparian birding

Roaring Fork Conservancy’s Riparian Birding at Cattle Creek Easement will take place from 7-8 a.m. Sept. 10. Join local bird experts and be introduced to local riparian birds and their habitats. Bring binoculars and dress appropriately for being outside the entire time. This walk is free and open to the public, however, space is limited, and registration is required. High School Musical

Defiance Community Players’ 2008 fall production will be the highly acclaimed Disney “High School Musical.” Show dates will be Nov. 14-16 and 21-23 at the new theater in Glenwood Springs High School. Directed by Jennetta M. Howell, auditions will be held in September, and dates and times to be announced.

The production will be casting — ages 13 and up — actors, singers, dancers, jocks, thespians, cheerleaders and brainiacs; one male adult and one female adult role is available. Be prepared to move/dance and bring sheet music, as everyone is required to sing with a pianist.

Auditions will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Glenwood Springs High School, enter on the 14th Street entrance to the Small Performance Theatre and follow the signs; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, in the choir room, enter on the 14th Street entrance and follow the signs.

Snowmass balloon events

The Snowmass Balloon Festival sends over 30 balloons up in the air Sept. 11-14.

All balloon events are free to the public and launch from the Snowmass Village Softball fields at 7 a.m. each morning, while the balloon glow starts at 6 p.m. Food vendors and special family activities for the kids are also on-sight.

Sheepdog championships

The 22nd annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials takes place Sept. 3-7 in Meeker. Five days of sheepdog herding competition with a $20,000 purse.

Other activities include a daily craft fair and food booths, American Humane Association Rescue Rig, weekend pancake breakfasts … demos by top dog handlers, spinners, weavers, felters, fly-tiers and saddle-makers, a petting farm, sheepherder’s wagon, service/therapy dogs art contest and silent auction. A Saturday night barbecue and free Wichitones’ country folk concert; Sunday lamb barbecue and Scottish Country Dancers.

Tourism on the Road

The 2008 Heritage Tourism On The Road event will be held in Glenwood Springs Sept. 12-14.

Events include a private tour of the Fairy Caves, complete with a gondola ride up Iron Mountain, dinner and entertainment; a buffalo stew lunch, a tour of Doc Holliday’s gravesite, and historic vignettes by local actors hosted by the Frontier Museum; a bus tour of natural and historic delights of the Glenwood Springs area; a ghost tour of the long dark hallways of the Hotel Colorado; and a discussion of the preservation of indigenous wikiups at the historic Cardiff Schoolhouse.

Yoga with Nova

A mixed levels Anusara®Yoga Workshop taught by a recognized Anusara certified teacher, Nova Loverro Sprick, will be held from 3–6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at Aspen Health and Harmony in El Jebel. An ATV/dirt bike poker run will be held Aug. 23 in DeBeque. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown DeBeque. Cash is awarded to the top five poker hands. Do not have to be present to accept cash prizes.
