Ludtke wins Burton Medal

Dr. Steve Ludtke, associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, has won the Burton Medal, awarded by the Microscopy Society of America. This is the most prestigious award for an investigator under 40 years of age in either physical or biological microscopy. The award was presented to him at the annual meeting of the MSA in August 2008.

The MSA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the knowledge of the science and practice of all microscopical imaging, analysis and diffraction techniques useful for understanding the ultrastructure and function of materials in diverse areas of biological, materials, medical and physical sciences.

Steve graduated from Glenwood Springs High School in 1986. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics from California Institute of Technology and his master’s and Ph.D. in biophysics from Rice University.

Bundle of joy

Sabrina and Javier Abarca of Rifle are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Jasmin Abarca Holbrook, at 1:11 p.m. Aug. 19, 2008, at Valley View Hospital. She weighed 9 pounds, 15.1 ounces, and was 21 inches long at birth.

Siblings Annabel, 12; Tyler, 9; and Rubi, 3, welcomed her home.

Proud grandparents are Tammie and Ron Holbrook of Rifle, and Maria Felix Lagunas and Alberto Abarca of Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Sweet little angel

Jose and Kerry Sanchez of Thornton are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Xander Manuel Sanchez, born at 9:13 a.m. Father’s Day, June 15, 2008, at at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette. Xander weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long at birth.

Proud grandparents are Ron and Teresa Fuller of Glenwood Springs, Elia Barragan of Carbondale, and Amador Sanchez of Mexico. Great-grandparents are Fred and Bernadette Flohr of Glenwood Springs, Joseph Oberosler of Glenwood Springs and Adela Sanchez of Carbondale.
