GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — The start to their respective seasons couldn’t be much different for Glenwood Springs and Eagle Valley.
The former’s outscored its opponents 66-40. The latter’s been outscored 60-14.
Glenwood’s holding steady near the top of Class 3A, staking claim to the No. 3 ranking in the latest RockyPreps’ poll. Eagle Valley won’t be breaking into the top 10 any time soon.
Tonight, the schools clash at Glenwood Springs High School in what will be the 3A Western Slope League opener for both.
The 2-0 Demons enter the contest on the heels of a 35-14 win over Class 3A No. 10 Conifer on their home field last week, while Eagle Valley struggled in a 32-7 loss to Class 2A Olathe.
Glenwood won last year’s meeting with the Devils by a count of 48-13.

Grand Valley faces familiar foe
PARACHUTE, Colorado — Though no longer league mates, Grand Valley and Paonia have a history as rivals.
So much so that Mike Johnson won’t take the Eagles lightly tonight, even if his Cardinals dealt them a 40-14 loss in 1A Western Slope League play last year.
“It’s traditionally a war with those guys. Last year we thumped on them, but they have a new coach so we’ll have to see what we’re up against,” Johnson said after his now-2A team beat Denver Manual 61-8.
That new coach is Craig Cerise, and he has Paonia off to a 2-0 start. The Eagles followed up an Aug. 22 win over Dolores with a 30-13 drubbing of Cedaredge last week.

Coal Ridge faces Peyton in matinee meeting
PEYTON, Colorado — Coal Ridge has had all week to relish and revel in the program’s second-ever varsity victory, which came in the form of a 16-14 win over 1A Hayden last week.
On Saturday, the Titans look to make it 2-0 with a trip to face the 1A South Central League’s Peyton, a school located roughly 25 miles northeast of Colorado Springs.
Peyton opened its season last Friday with a 35-8 win over Crowley County.
Rifle takes aim at Moffat County
CRAIG, Colorado — Both Rifle and Moffat County will be seeking their first victories when the two meet in Craig in their 3A Western Slope League opener tonight.
Neither is coming off a flattering opener, with the Bears losing at Silver Creek, 35-6, and Moffat County taking a 40-7 beating from No. 1 Berthoud.
Roaring Fork travels to Hayden
HAYDEN, Colorado — Roaring Fork, with a small roster, didn’t enjoy the best of season openers last Friday, losing to 1A Hotchkiss 41-0.
The Rams won’t have it much easier tonight when they travel to take on 1A Hayden, a school that’s one year removed from a 9-3 showing.
