Roaring Fork’s Evonitz three shots off the lead at Moffat County Invitational

CRAIG, Colorado — Roaring Fork’s Micah Evonitz swung a hot club on Thursday, carding an 80 at Moffat County Invitational boys golf tournament.

The 8-over-par round at Yampa Valley Golf Course earned the Ram a share of ninth place overall and landed him just three strokes back of tournament winners Justin Russell of Montrose and Calen Hoppe of Grand Junction Central.

Montrose won the tournament, with its top three golfers combining on a 235. Steamboat was second at 236 and Central and Battle Mountain third at 242.

Glenwood Springs scored the top team finish among Garfield County schools, posting a 274 that earned the Demons 12th place. Grand Valley was 14th (276), Rifle 17th (285), Coal Ridge 18th (290) and Roaring Fork 19th (310).

Castillo, Devils too much for Titans

GYPSUM, Colorado— With two games against 4A schools and one against a 5A school under its belt, Coal Ridge should be more than ready by the time they hit the road for Hotchkiss on Saturday.

The Class 3A Western Slope League Titans played the second of those 4A schools on Thursday, losing at Eagle Valley by a count of 4-0.

“I think we’ll really be ready for Saturday,” said Coal Ridge head coach Brian Blair, whose team dropped to 1-2-0 on the young season. “If we play with the same effort we had against [Grand Junction] Central [on Tuesday] and Eagle, I think we’ll have a lot of success against Hotchkiss.”

On Thursday, though, Cesar Castllo and the Devils proved too much for Blair’s Titans. Castillo had two goals and an assist to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Devils in which two others scored goals.

“We probably had a good 10 shots, but we just didn’t really finish,” the coach said.

With the tough pre-league schedule under their belt, Blair and company are eager to hit the pitch for Saturday’s 11 a.m. 3A WSL opener.

“We hope, by playing those teams, that we’ll be ready to play the best in our league,” Blair said.
