GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado High interest generated from Holy Cross Energys consumer incentive program, where customers were given rebates on purchases of Energy Star appliances and devices, caused the local energy cooperative to extend the program for three more months.Initially running from June 15 to Sept. 15, Holy Cross Energy, which has 53,000 meters in its system in Garfield, Eagle and Pitkin counties, will now give consumer rebates on any purchase of Energy Star appliances and devices purchased between June 15 and Dec.15.Its interesting that the economic stimulus campaign has proved to be very fruitful for Holy Cross in providing financial incentives for our customers for energy conservation, said Steve Casey, member services and marketing administrator for Holy Cross. The economic stimulus campaign began in June to correspond with the government stimulus payments, according to Casey, in hopes that local residents would use the payments to purchase certified Energy Star appliances. The idea worked rather well, according to Casey. We were trying to target Holy Cross Energy consumers that received a stimulus payment to spend a portion, if not all, on energy conservation and efficiency, Casey said.Normally through Holy Cross Energys WE CARE program, where they offer similar incentives to consumers, they averaged 50 applicants per month from January through June of 2008, with an average savings of $82 per person. During the month of July, the first full month of the stimulus campaign, Holy Cross saw an increase of 40 applicants for the rebates, and paid out $13,641 for an average rebate per consumer of $151. August saw 113 participants with more than $24,000 in rebates paid out.We had a 125 percent increase in participation and about a 505 percent increase in the amount of money that we were distributing back to our customers, Casey said. Based upon the success of July and August we are going to extend the campaign through December 15.Community Office for Resource Efficiency (CORE) in Carbondale also offered consumer incentives in conjunction with the Holy Cross program. Aspen Electric also offered similar consumer incentives through Dec. 15, which will continue as well.
