Demons throttle Delta

DELTA, Colorado — Taking a 42-0 lead by halftime gave Glenwood the chance to rest its starters — quarterback Dakota Stonehouse and running back Michael Hudson, namely — against Delta on Friday night.

Behind 159 yards and three touchdowns from Hudson and a 5-for-8, 90-yard performance by Stonehouse that featured a pair of long scoring strikes to Connor Riley, the Demons rolled to a 42-14 win over the Panthers under a running second-half clock.

Hudson’s three scores came in the form of a 1-yard plunge, a 65-yard scamper and an 82-yard score behind offensive lineman Hunter McCallum. Stonehouse found Riley on TDs spanning 36 and 24 yards and Josh Galvan scored on an end-around as the Demons improved to 4-0 overall and to 2-0 in 3A Western Slope League play.

Also of note, Demon kicker Clay Hawkins converted six extra-points against Delta and hasn’t missed in 19 attempts this season.

Rams dominate Meeker
MEEKER — The Rams’ offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, giving quarterback Ryan Weimer plenty of time to dissect the Meeker secondary and Soren Phibbs plenty of room to run in Roaring Forks’ convincing 34-8 victory Friday night.
Weimer finished 10 of 12 passing for 98 yards with a touchdown and two rushing TD’s. Running back Soren Phibbs led the way on the ground for the Rams with 99 yards on 15 carries and two TD’s plus a 22-yard receiving TD. Dana Holley led all receivers with 4 catches for 39 yards.
The Rams took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Phibbs rumbled into the endzone from 7-yards out and expanded on it in the second quarter when Weimer delivered a 22-yard strike to Phibbs and scored on a 4-yard keeper, giving Roaring Fork a commanding 20-0 lead at the half.
Phibbs ripped off a 42-yard run in the third quarter to make it 27-0 before Meeker got on the scoreboard with a 10-yard pass play and subsequent two-point conversion to cut it to 27-8.
But, it was too little, too late as the Rams put the icing on the cake with another Weimer TD.
Rifle-Glenwood soccer moved to 1:30 p.m.
GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Today’s Rifle at Glenwood boys soccer game, originally slated to start at 11 a.m., is now scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Glenwood Springs High School.
Tigers upend Cardinals
HAYDEN — Even though they are no longer league mates, Hayden and Grand Valley still have quite the football rivalry brewing
And, on Friday, Hayden dominated the 2008 chapter of that rivalry, beating up on the visiting Cardinals 28-7.
In the past four seasons, Grand Valley’s won two 1A Western Slope League titles and Hayden’s won two.
That had to sweeten the Tigers’ Friday win over the now-2A Cardinals.
Hayden quarterback Mitchel Doolin scored a touchdown in each quarter to help the Tigers to a big lead. He had three of those scores through the air and another on the ground.
Grand Valley sidestepped a shutout in with a fourth-quarter TD from William Waugh, who rumbled 59 yards.
Waugh led the Cardinals with 77 yards rushing on carries, while Colton Cowan chipped in with 44 yards on 14 takes.
Grand Valley, which opens its 2A WSL schedule next week at home against Gunnison, dropped to 2-1. Hayden improved to 2-1.
Titans overwhelm Rangely
RANGELY — Brady Gasaway had 125 yards on the ground and three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) as Coal Ridge smothered Rangely High School 41-14 on Friday night.
“Our offensive line played really well,” said Coal Ridge head coach Scott Parker. “Kevin Laidlaw and Adam Miller, a couple of seniors, are leading the way as that unit really comes together to open up some huge holes for our backs and give [Keenan] Grumley time to throw.”
Grumley had a 80-yard TD pass, Josh Alsop added 90 yards and a TD on the ground and freshman Cameron Cotton also had a TD.
