Demons continue to roll, crush Huskies

EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado — Glenwood Springs quarterback Dakota Stonehouse accounted for a mere two touchdowns Friday night—both through the air—yet the Demons somehow still found a way to beat Battle Mountain, going away, 56-7.

Believe it or not, there is a lot more to the flying circus known as Demons football than the signal-caller they call “Doc.” Glenwood can run as well as Michael Hudson showed with mad dashes of 66 and 86 yards in the first quarter as the Demons moved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the 3A Slope.

“I was just running hard and I followed my blockers,” Hudson said. “That’s all I did. That’s my job. It was just good to see my o-linemen hit people and make the right blocks. It’s all because of them. It’s always because of them.”

And that’s what has most coaching staffs in the league scratching their heads. By his standards, Stonehouse had a rather quiet evening, completing 10-of-11 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns.

By no means did the Huskies shut Stonehouse down, but Glenwood continued to show that there’s more to this team than a passing game.

“It was just one of those nights where a lot of different things happened,” Demons coach Rocky Whitworth said. “You’ve got to take what’s given to you.

Mikey Hudson had two great runs with great blocking and it kind of changed the game early. We do usually throw the ball more than we run it.”

Hudson and the Glenwood offensive line made quick work of Battle Mountain off the first play from scrimmage. The senior rumbled 64 yards to the end zone with 11:37 left in the first quarter.

Battle Mountain’s Jon Simpson and Mason Babcock forced the Demons to turn the ball over on downs with a combined sack of Stonehouse. The Huskies took over on their 34-yard line and moved the ball into Glenwood territory. On fourth-and-6, Huskies quarterback Parke Robbins was picked off by Glenwood’s Kevin Screen.

The Demons started on their 4, and Hudson went 96 yards on the next play for

a 14-0 lead. Stonehouse to Screen for seven yards extended the lead. The Huskies looked like they had another opportunity to score when Josh Kundolf

blocked a punt, giving Battle Mountain the ball on the Glenwood 13.

Instead, Robbins, who has been one of the bright lights this year for the Huskies, threw his second pick of the night. This one, Screen returned 97 yards for a touchdown.

The Demons next struck on defense. As Robbins was trying to hand off to Chris Libertini, Glenwood’s Jordan Ciani broke up the play and returned a fumble 37 yards for a score.

Up 35-0 at the half, Stonehouse found a streaking Connor Riley for 41 yards and another TD. The Demons’ Tyler Thulson and Luke Jacob rushed for late scores.

Battle Mountain got on the board late in the third quarter on an 81-yard pass from Robbins to Kundolf.

Bears bounced at Cortez

CORTEZ, Colorado — Rifle dropped its third straight football game on Friday, losing to Montezuma-Cortez 56-31 in a high-scoring road affair.

Quarterback Logan Powell threw three TD passes and ran for two scores to pace the Bears on offense.

Rifle made a game of what appeared to be a blowout in the early going, falling behind 28-0 and then pulling to within three at 28-25 after Powell entered the game in the second quarter.

Cortez, though, scored three TDs in the second half to pull away.

The Bears fell to 1-4 overall and to 1-2 in the 3A WSL, while Cortez upped its records to 3-2 overall and to 1-2 in league.

Volleyball Cards nearly upset Basalt

BASALT, Colorado — Grand Valley nearly nipped one of 3A WSL volleyball’s top teams in Basalt on Friday, losing in five (25-22, 24-26, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13).

The Cardinals dropped to 4-9 overall and to 3-7 in league with the defeat, while Basalt upped its overall record to 10-1 and its league mark to 7-1.

Cowboys overpower Rams in volleyball

CARBONDALE, Colorado — Gunnison showed why it’s unbeaten and shares a piece of first place in 3A WSL volleyball by knocking off host Roaring Fork in four games on Friday.

The Rams fell to 4-7 overall and to 3-6 in the 3A WSL, while the Cowboys improved to 9-1 overall and to 7-0 in league.

CMC soccer tripped up by North Idaho

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Colorado Mountain College’s weekend trip to Salt Lake City Community College didn’t get off to the best of starts on Friday.

The Eagles’ men’s soccer team dropped its first of three games in Salt Lake, losing to North Idaho College by a 4-0 count.

CMC returns to the pitch today against Westminster College’s junior varsity squad before a Sunday game against host Salt Lake CC.
