The Glenwood Springs Post Independent has made several changes to our comics sections. Starting today, there will be a mix of new and old comics, and on Sunday, there will be a more dramatic change.
A variety of factors led to the revamping of the comics sections. One of those is the desire to get newer, fresher comic strips into the paper, and that decision was influenced by some of the older strips being in reruns. Comic strip reruns offer enjoyment to some, maybe many, but we decided it was time to update and make some changes to the weekday comics section.
One of the biggest factors involved in our decision-making process was financial. Some comic strips are more expensive than others, and we needed to trim some of our costs.
Thats where the big change to Sunday comes into play. Having a four-page comics section has always been a great feature for the Post Independent. We were forced to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a four-page section, and we concluded that a change was necessary. Thats why the Sunday comics section, starting Oct. 5, will go from 13 comics to six. Its a large drop but one that needed to be made from a cost perspective.
The comics, crossword and horoscope will now move into the back pages of the Sunday newspaper starting Oct. 5.
We tried to maintain some variety in our weekday and Sunday comics, with some comic strips appearing just during the week and others appearing just on Sunday.
The changes will be harsh to some. Change can be a painful reality. But we hope you try and understand why these changes were implemented.
