October is a busy month at the Garfield County Public Library District. Teen Read Week is Oct. 12-18, with the theme of “Books with Bite @ your library.” Teen Read Week was initiated by the Young Adult Library Services Association in 1998 to remind teens to read for pleasure. The Garfield County Public Library District is pleased to announce special October events to celebrate teens, tweens and youngsters.
The Glenwood Springs Branch Library is hosting “Vamp Dance,” a vampire masquerade teen dance with a disk jockey from 2 Rivers Productions. The dance will be held from 7-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, for teens from 13-18 years old. Glenwood tweens between the ages of 9 and 12 are invited to a Halloween party from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.
The Rifle Branch Library will have drawings to give away vampire-themed books. Rifle preschoolers will march in the annual Costume Parade Oct. 31. Please sign up by calling 625-3471, or stop by the library.
The Parachute Branch Library has five teen book clubs in progress, and middle-schoolers are following Amy and Dan around the world as they hunt for 39 clues.
The Gordon Cooper Branch is setting up a computer to vote for the best Books with Bite. Everyone who votes will have a chance in a drawing to win one.
The Silt Branch Library is having drawings for special Books with Bite mugs.
New Castle teens are invited to join a library-bound scavenger hunt for Books with a Bite from Oct. 13-18. The New Castle Branch also has planned a “Haunted Coffee House” from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, story timers will have their traditional Halloween parade, trick-or-treating to downtown New Castle businesses. Call your local branches for more information on these October events.
In addition to the various programs the libraries have to offer, we have lots of resources for making costumes, throwing Halloween parties, or stirring up some ghostly treats. All those pirates and princesses who need a book to match their costumes for school can find them at the library. Your local librarian will be happy to help you find a book with just the right bite!
