Grand Valley runs all over Rams in 40-16 win

CARBONDALE, Colorado — One week after running the halfback counter to perfection against Aspen, the Grand Valley Cardinals used two long second quarter runs by Eric Glaze off the same play to propel themselves to a 40-16 road victory over Roaring Fork.

Grand Valley (6-1 overall, 4-0 league) entered ranked No. 8 for 3A teams in the state playing out of the Western Slope League. The Cardinals had been a dangerously powerful running team all season featuring lead back Colton Cowan and they certainly didn’t shed that image on Friday night against the Rams.

Behind 191 yards on 20 carries from Cowan and 138 on six carries from Glaze, the Cardinals piled up 367 total yards on the ground and five touchdowns. Much of Cowan’s yardage came on one carry when he busted a pitch to the outside for 83 yards and a score in the third quarter. Cowan and Glaze each scored a pair of TDs while fullback William Waugh also had a TD.

“The style of defense they play, [Roaring Fork] really attacks the middle so we felt like if we could just hold them in the middle, get on the edge we could get them there,” Grand Valley assistant coach Jeremy Tanner said of the sweep calls.

The Rams entered the game with a two-game winning streak and once again started strong out of the gate against the Cardinals. The defense forced a three-and-out and a couple of drives later, the offense had finished off a 16-play, 88-yard drive with a Soren Phibbs TD with just over 9 minutes left in the half.

From there, however, the Cardinals running game got loose and within five minutes, Glaze had scored on consecutive drives, breaking off 52 and 67 yard scampers on the same sweep play Grand Valley used against Aspen.

It was a play the Rams had worked hard on all week to stop after seeing it on film, but it was easier said than done against the Cardinals as Roaring Fork head coach Greg Holley found out.

“You gotta take a look at the fumbles and turnovers,” Holley lamented after the game. “The second half we kept on battling back despite them scoring on some big plays. It’s not like they drove the ball on us and stuck it down our throats.”

Phibbs led the way on the ground for the Rams, reaching 100 yards for the third consecutive game on 22 carries, two for scores. Dana Holley added 32 yards on seven carries. Meanwhile, Ryan Weimer had a tough day passing, going just 10 of 22 for 80 yards.

The Cardinals defense absolutely suffocated the Rams offense in the second and third quarters when they pulled away with a 34-3 scoring advantage. Grand Valley outgained the Rams 443 yards to just 204 despite just seven first downs.

“I’m real proud of them,” Tanner added. “We knew that Roaring Fork had a lot of size and they’re a physical team and just knew that we had to match that. They always come out strong and if we were just able to weather the storm at the beginning...in the second half we could pour it on.”

Roaring Fork (3-4 overall, 2-2 league) travels out to Aspen next week for a big matchup with the Skiers.
