As residents of Garfield County, we need a state senator who will not overlook or forget the issues important to us.
The Senate District 8 includes all or parts of Garfield, Eagle, Rio Blanco, Moffat, Routt and Jackson counties. A massive district with a plethora of issues.
Republican Al White, who currently represents House District 57, is running against Democrat Ken Brenner to take over the District 8 Senate seat currently held by Republican Jack Taylor.
Both candidates reside in Routt County - White from Hayden and Brenner from Steamboat Springs. Both are very familiar with the issues facing the district and have shown great knowledge of the issues specific to Garfield County.
Both would make fine state senators. However, we feel that Mr. White's experience in the House makes him a better fit for the state Senate seat.
Representing a large district takes balance and a commonsense approach that will benefit the entire district.
We feel that Mr. White has demonstrated those traits while serving two terms as the representative for House District 57, which includes parts of Western Garfield County.
His work with water, agriculture and tourism issues has been strong and beneficial to the district.
We also feel that Mr. White's willingness to extend a hand across the aisle to Democrats makes him a strong candidate well-suited to continue his efforts at the state level.
He has a strong working relationship with House District 61 Rep. Kathleen Curry, who is a Democrat. Curry's district includes most of Garfield County. She and White have worked well together, and we feel that their political relationship will continue to be beneficial to us here in Garfield County.
Mr. Brenner brings a strong background in government and a knowledge of the issues. We also like the fact the Mr. Brenner is a native of the district and has strong Western Slope values. But we feel that Mr. White's experience in the House is a clear distinction between the two candidates.
Mr. White has served District 57 well and has shown the ability to work with both parties while in the House to get things done. That's why we feel that Al White is the best choice for the State Senate 8 seat in this election.
