PEACH VALLEY, Colorado — Two Coal Ridge High School seniors, Kelly Romero and Chloe Nelson, were selected for the Colorado Coaches of Girl’s Sports (CCGS) All-State Volleyball Games Sunday in Broomfield.

The honor was a good way to cap their CRHS careers, according to Romero who has played all four years for the Titans.

“From the beginning, this is what we’ve worked toward,” Romero said as she traveled with her family to Broomfield Friday evening.

“Winning this honor is icing on the cake,” she said.

The CCGS sponsored All-State Game began in 1978 as a stage for the state’s best high school volleyball players to showcase their talent.

Each senior athlete is nominated by coaches within their respective leagues. In all, 90 seniors across the state are selected to play.

The honors for these two CRHS seniors came as a surprise to Romero.

“I didn’t grade myself this season, so I didn’t know where I stood,” Romero confessed.

“I was kind of surprised. I wasn’t expecting it.”

Romero received All-Conference honors all four years at CRHS.

In only their fourth season of competition the Titan’s Volleyball team set the bar high in 2008, finishing the season 20-5 overall, (19-3, regular season) winning the 3A Western Slope League with a 16-0 league record which advanced the team to regionals for the first time in school history. The Titan’s posted a 1-2 record at regionals in Colorado Springs, ending their state playoff run.

Romero attributed her success to her team.

“I couldn’t have gotten this honor without my teammates,” she said.

The first CCGS 1A game starts at 11 a.m. Sunday at Broomfield High School. The division 2A game starts at 11:30 a.m., 3A at 12:30, 4A at 1 p.m., and 5A at 2 p.m.

CRHS Volleyball coach, Denise Greene accompanied her players to the event.

Saturday the girls had a practice during the day and a banquet dinner in the evening to honor all 90 girls.
