The KidzPlex preschoolers are proud to show off the pile of food items they have collected so far for the LIFT-UP holiday food drive. Each morning the youngsters arrive at school to excitedly announce, "Ms. Joanie, we bringed some foods for those peoples!"
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — You’re never too young to help others. KidzPlex Preschool in Glenwood Springs is helping its young students understand the meaning of Thanksgiving.
Preschool manager and teacher Joan Graves said as part of the preschool curriculum, KidzPlex students are learning about community service. The “Tiny Hands Helping” holiday food drive is being promoted by the KidzPlex Preschool kids and the KidzPlex gymnastics teams to benefit the LIFT-UP holiday food drive. The facility is hoping for a successful effort, and to make this an annual event for the kids.
KidzPlex teachers Graves and Pam Markle are reading Thanksgiving stories such as “Helping Hands,” to the children, as part of the community service curriculum. The preschool personnel reinforces the concepts of community service and charitable work through a variety of activities, including art projects such as basic handprint turkeys and pilgrim hats.
With the conversations generated by the food drive and related activities, the preschoolers are beginning to understand the food collected will be given to less-fortunate children.
Canned vegetables, fruits, pie filling, cranberry sauce, canned milk, peanut butter, jelly, gravy (canned or mixes), pie crusts, dessert mixes, Jell-O, pudding mixes, stuffing, biscuit mixes, roll and cornbread mixes may be brought to the collection boxes located at KidzPlex Preschool (100 Midland Ave., Suite 280) and KidzPlex Gymnastics center (100 Midland Ave., Suite 250).
Stop by KidzPlex Preschool between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, or KidzPlex Gymnastics center between 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, to drop off items. Or call 945-7190 or 945-0606 to arrange a drop-off time. Items will be accepted through Friday, December 12th.
KidzPlex Preschool is now licensed to accept children ages 12 months through 5 years old. No other child care facility in Glenwood Springs accepts children as young as 12 months.
Sometimes little kids can surprise their elders by their insight.
Grasping the Thanksgiving concept, five-year-old Devin Augustynowicz declared, “We're like the Indians that gave food to the new people.”
