GARFIELD COUNTY, Colorado — While Garfield County seniors won’t have an option for a meal on Thanksgiving through the seniors program, they will have three days of options leading up to turkey day.
“We are doing turkey dinners, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at all the meal sites,” said Garfield County Senior Program Manager Judy Martin.
Martin said that a lot of the valley’s seniors have plans on Thanksgiving so meals on the holiday were not necessary, but there are still a number of residents who do not. So, Martin and the GCSP has been helping to inform seniors of what will be available for them on the holiday.
“It’s just linking them up with the various things that are going on,” Martin said. “The community has been really nice in providing options.”
Meals like the one the Glenwood Springs Eagles Club is doing on Thanksgiving in Glenwood are available for people who are interested, according to Martin.
“I’ve been encouraging those who do not have things planned to attend any of the meals,” Martin said. “Especially, those who do not already come to regular meals, we would love to have them if they don’t have something else to do.”
Garfield County Human Services took over the senior nutrition and transportation programs from CMC on July 1.
Seniors will also be able to rely on the Traveler which will be running as usual on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for doctor appointments, shopping, or for a ride to the meals at any of the senior center locations, Martin said.
And in December, Seniors can expect big changes.
“The county just took it over in July, and CMC didn’t do meals all the time,” Martin said. “The change is going to happen in December.”
Martin said CMC would close the senior program for the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, but that is going to change this year.
“We are serving meals on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve,” Martin said. “I’ve been out to the sites and have asked the people what they wanted, and this is what they’ve said. So, we’ve been trying to hook things together.”
Thanksgiving meals will be served at noon and are $2.50 for seniors, but accommodation can be made for those who cannot afford that. And for visitors in town, meals are $2.50 for people over 60-years-of-age, and $6 for people under 60.

Turkey time
Monday: Dinners in New Castle and at the Sunnyside Retirement Center in Glenwood Springs.
Tuesday: Dinners at the Chat and Chew at Colorado Mountain College’s Glenwood Center, and at the Rifle Senior Center. Wednesday: Dinners will be at the senior centers in Carbondale, Silt, and Parachute. Dinner times are at noon, cost for seniors is $2.50. |
