Titan boys notch win in Harvey’s return to Parachute

PARACHUTE, Colorado — Eric Schmitz scored 20 points as Coal Ridge held off Grand Valley 49-42 on Friday and improved to 3-0 on the boys basketball season.

Andy Smedra chipped in 10 points for the Titans and Alex Klein had seven as longtime Grand Valley assistant Paul Harvey, now head coach at Coal Ridge, made his first trip back to Parachute.

“It was weird being back there,” Harvey said, “with a different locker room, different bench, knowing everyone there. Shaking the Grand Valley players’ hands was a little different, but it was fun to go against them.”

Dalton Penner led the Cardinals, 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the 3A Western Slope League, with 10 points. Colton Cowan chipped in with seven.

Coal Ridge girls edge Grand Valley

PARACHUTE, Colorado — Sam Wilson scored 10 points and Kelly Romero and Morgan Jessup added nine as Coal Ridge’s girls hoops team slipped past Grand Valley 40-38 on Friday.

The Titans trailed early, going down 15-5 after a quarter, before finding their stroke and outscoring the Cardinals 14-6 in the second quarter and 13-9 in the third to go ahead.

Coal Ridge improved to 2-1 overall and to 1-0 in the 3A WSL.

Grand Valley, which got 13 points from Erin Vanderpool and 10 from Shawnee Young, dropped to 3-2 overall and to 1-1 in league.

Cedaredge holds off Roaring Fork in boys hoops

CARBONDALE — Roaring Fork missed on a 3-pointer with time expiring as Cedaredge scored a 49-46 boys basketball win over the Rams on Friday.

Ryan Weimer led Roaring Fork, now 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the 3A WSL, with 21 points. Jake Hawkins and Diego Rubio chipped in with eight points apiece.

Cedaredge improved to 4-0 overall and to 3-0 in league.

Ram girls fall to Cedaredge

CARBONDALE, Colorado — Maria Flores scored 14 points and Joey Clingan added 10 points as Roaring Fork’s girls basketball team fell to Cedaredge 52-37 on Friday.

Alli Zeigel added seven points for the Rams, who dropped to 0-3 overall and to 0-1 in 3A WSL play.

Cedaredge upped its record to 1-3 overall and to 1-2 in league.

GVHS girls beat Cedaredge; Cardinal boys lose

CEDAREDGE — The Grand Valley Cardinals girls basketball team opened Thursday evening with a 52-48 win over the Cedaredge Bruins, but the boys couldn’t complete the sweep, losing 36-34.

Cardinal head coach Mike Johnson thought his team didn’t execute very well as they had a lot of breakdowns. Once they were able to get up by 10 to 12 points, the Cardinals let their play slip.

“Their size got to us a little bit,” Johnson said.

The Cardinals don’t have anyone over 5 feet, 8 inches, and they’ll have to deal with that height disadvantage the rest of the season.

The girls were led by Shawnee Young’s 14 points, 12 coming on threes. Kasi Jensen did a good job in the post, netting 10, while Erin Vanderpool added 11 and Tiffany Waugh contributed six of her own.

For the boys, Cedaredge handed the Cardinals a 36-34 loss.

“It was completely my fault,” head coach Mark Cowan said. “I did a poor job of subbing. We’re still working on the substitute pattern, and I’m not trusting them (his players).”

The boys were tied at 13 at the end of the first, and the Cardinals were up 25-19 going into the third quarter. The game looked to be in their hands.

But that’s where the trouble started. The Cardinals didn’t net a single point in the third and found themselves behind 32-25 going into the final period.

With 15 seconds left and the score knotted at 34, Cedaredge pushed down court and nailed a two-pointer for the win.

“It was a heartbreaker,” Cowan said. “We had our shots, we just couldn’t hit anything. The kids were tired and we quit running things.”

Colton Cowan led the Cardinals with 11 points and Michael Shepard added nine. Dalton Penner chipped in eight, Landon Paskett four and William Waugh had two points.
