GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — Glenwood Springs got its girls swimming season off to a perfect start with a double-dual sweep of Aspen and Fruita Monument at Orchard Mesa Middle School in Grand Junction on Saturday.

The Demons defeated Aspen by a count of 130.5-64.5 and narrowly nipped Fruita Monument 108-106.

Glenwood’s relay teams were a big part of the wins. All three relay teams — 200-yard medley, 200 freestyle and 400 free — notched victories.

Sierra Grove, Keevyn Scholl, Clara Thorsen and Morgan Wyrick comprised the 200 medley group, while Anna Wiltse, Thorsen, Rachel Sobke and Christina Smith made up the 200 free foursome and Wyrick, Scholl, Grove and Wiltse swam the 400 free.

The Demons also got much-needed points from their B relay units.

Individually, Scholl won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, qualifying for state in the latter with a time of 1 minute, 14.25 seconds.

Grove won both the 50 and 500 free, swimming state-qualifying times in both. Her 50 time was 25.7 seconds and her 500 free mark was 5:46.13.

Thorsen earned Glenwood a win in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 1:10.59.

“It was good,” Demons coach Michelle Brune said. “Fruita’s got like a 30-swimmer roster — huge — so I was worried they’d get us with their depth. But our middle swimmers were good. It helped that we had our B relays and some freshmen score some points.”

Glenwood returns to the pool at Orchard Mesa for a third straight weekend next Saturday. The Demons will take on Grand Junction and Moffat County in another double dual.

Last weekend, Glenwood traveled to Orchard Mesa for the league relays, a laid-back, all-relay event.

Titan boys catch fire in fourth to beat Hotchkiss

PEACH VALLEY, Colorado — Coal Ridge outgunned visiting Hotchkiss 26-7 in the fourth quarter to nail down a 72-63 boys basketball win on Saturday.

Eric Schmitz paced the Titans, a perfect 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the 3A Western Slope League, with 22 points. Adam Miller added 19 points and Jonathon Roessler chipped in with 12. Roessler also had seven rebounds.

J.T. Hotchkiss scored 28 points for Hotchkiss, which fell to 0-3 overall and in the 3A WSL.

Coal Ridge girls down Hotchkiss

PEACH VALLEY, Colorado — The Coal Ridge Titans girls basketball team sits on a 2-0 3A WSL record after defeating Hotchkiss 44-39 Friday afternoon. Overall, the Titans are 3-1 this season.

Morgan Jessup led the way for the Titans with 21 points, 12 coming from three-pointers. Tori Verdieck added 12 points and Mikaela Guettler had six.

Coal Ridge found itself down 13-8 after one quarter and then exploded for 20 points in the second period to make it a 28-25 lead going into the half.

The Titan defense clamped down in the second half, allowing just six points in the third and eight points in the fourth period.

Amy Miller paced Hotchkiss (2-1 overall, 2-1 3A WSL) with 11 points and CeCe Pieper added nine of her own.

Weimer, Hawkins post double-doubles as Roaring Fork boys win

BASALT, Colorado — Roaring Fork got its first boys basketball win of the season on Saturday, beating Basalt 48-40 on the road.

Ryan Weimer scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Rams, who leveled their 3A WSL record at 1-1 and are now 1-3 overall. Jake Hawkins also had a double-double, pulling 18 boards and scoring 10 points. Michael Black chipped in with eight points for Roaring Fork.

The Rams and Longhorns matched point totals in every quarter but the third, a frame Roaring Fork won 11-3.

Flores’ 23 not enough to push Ram girls past Longhorns

BASALT, Colorado — Maria Flores’ game-high 23 points weren’t enough to lift Roaring Fork to its first girls basketball win of the season. The Rams fell just short at Basalt on Saturday, losing in the final seconds as Basalt converted critical free throws in the waning moments to put the finishing touches on a 59-55 win.

The win was the first of the season for Basalt, now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in 3A WSL play. Roaring Fork dropped to 0-4 overall and to 0-2 in league.

Central too much for Bear boys

RIFLE, Colorado — If moral victories mean anything, Rifle scored one against visiting Grand Junction Central on Friday.

The boys basketball Bears trailed by just three points at halftime against their undefeated, Class 5A foe, losing by a final of 70-51.

“We knew that they were pretty tough based on what they had done so far this year,” Rifle coach Chris Lowther said of 5-0 Central. “It was good to play them.”

Lowther’s Bears rallied toward the end of the first half to make a close game of it and hung with the Warriors for a while in the second half.

The loss dropped Rifle to 2-2 overall. Next up for the Bears is a Tuesday trip to Grand Junction.
