Every morning I can’t wait to go to work.
No, it’s not because I love my job so much — even though it’s not a bad gig. The reason I enjoy walking through the doors at the Glenwood Springs Post Independent every morning is because I love to see what’s been left under our Christmas tree.
Actually, tree is a figurative term. We don’t have a tree, but what we do have is a very generous, caring community.
Every morning there’s a massive pile of donated supplies just inside our front doors. Cat litter, dog food, teddy bears, giant cans of beans, boxes of rice, Cheerios and more.
A while back after Colorado Animal Rescue took in 86 cats and kittens from a home in Battlement Mesa, we asked for you to help out. You answered big time. A steady stream of pet supplies has been coming through our door, then out the door and up to CARE ever since.
I can’t tell you how good it makes me feel when I walk through the door and see a new pile of supplies that people have donated.
After seeing the tremendous response for our CARE supply drive we decided to be a drop-off point for canned and nonperishable food, and toys.
These are not easy times for folks. The economy is struggling, people are out of work, figuring out how to make ends meet is getting more difficult all the time.
And it’s the holidays. The holidays should be times of happiness and good times. But for so many, this holiday season is about getting by.
The donated food will be heading to LIFT-Up so they can get it to the people who really need it during these tough times. The toys have gone to Operation vacation and to LIFT-UP’s Angel Tree program.
Some will think it’s an exaggeration but we are looking at one of the most difficult times most of us can remember.
People need help, and so many of you have let your heart show the way.
It never ceases to amaze me how the holidays brings out the best in people. And we live in a very special community where people are always willing to look out for others.
Like the pet supply drive, the food and toy drive has been outstanding. People are thinking of others. Those folks who have seen better times.
There are so many ways to give during the holidays. Charities and nonprofits are always in need of help, and they in turn help others.
We here at the Post Independent wanted to provide a little help. But it’s you who have done the work.
To everyone who has dropped off supplies, thank you so much. Your efforts, big and small, will benefit so many during this holiday season.
Thinking of others is a very special trait. To all of you who embrace the idea of community and helping others in need, thank you.
