These are trying times for the newspaper industry. Like it is with so many industries nationwide, the anemic U.S. economy is wiping out jobs left and right.
Everyday, it seems, we read or hear about unemployment rates barreling toward double-digit percentages and companies slashing payroll to make ends meet.
As many of you may have read, the Glenwood Springs Post Independent experienced cuts of its own in recent weeks, cuts that will affect the sports coverage you see on these pages.
Sparing you the gory details, our resources aren’t what they once were. We won’t be able to catch quite as many games as we once did, and we’ll have fewer opportunities to travel to those high schools in the far reaches of Garfield County.
This just means that, more than ever, we’ll need the help of coaches and parents to ensure our sports coverage is as comprehensive as it can be.
Coaches: Please don’t be shy about phoning in your game results (384-9125 is our sportsline) or faxing over scoresheets (945-4487). And, of course, e-mail (sports@postindependent.com) works too.
Parents: News tips are always welcome. Is little Johnny going to college on a football scholarship? Is your kid’s basketball team tearing it up? Let us know.
The more we work together, the better the Glenwood Springs Post Independent sports section will be.
We’ll do our best to get out to whatever events we can and we still plan on bringing you plenty of features and updates on local athletes.
That won’t change.
We just need a little help to ensure our area athletes get the ink they deserve.
