SUNLIGHT MOUNTAIN RESORT, Colorado Just like last year, Crested Buttes Eric Sullivan was atop the mens solo podium at 24 Hours of Sunlight held over the weekend.
He has the two-peat in hand and thinks another run could be made next year for a three-peat.
I feel good now, Sullivan said at the base of Sunlight after his last lap. My knees are achy on the cool down now, but I have no complaints. The nice weather made all the difference. When the sun was coming up this morning, it was the sweetest thing.
He wasnt sure if he was even going to be in this years race. He was sick for most of last week and was dealing with some tendinitis in his knee from skiing hard for five days in Crested Butte before the competition. But that didnt slow him down.
Sullivan had 15 laps under 40 minutes, almost surprising himself.
Id check in down at the bottom here and theyd tell me, Hey that was 38. It was really shocking.
He built enough of a lead that he was able to rest for four and a half hours during Saturday night. A break he was thankful for.
Sullivan completed 27 laps in 22 hours, 19 minutes, ahead of second place finisher Mike McCoys 27 laps at 24:16:49.
The husband-wife combo of Andrew and Polly McLean, of Park City, Utah, had a fine day. Each competing solo, both finished third in their class. Polly finished 18 laps in 23:16:33, and Andrew did 26 laps in 23:28:30.
Dina Mishev, from Jackson, Wyo., won the womens solo class in 25:13:05 with 23 laps under her belt, or more properly, under her skins. She also set the world record for most vertical feet covered for a woman skier, over 34,000 feet.
Taking second was Jen Segger, of Squamish, British Columbia, when she worked through 19 laps in just under 22 and a half hours.
The fastest lap of the day was posted by Brain Harder at 27:34, his first lap on Saturday. He and Michael Werner, both from Jackson, comprised the team of The Mike and Brian Project, which took second in the duo pro class, behind The Highlanders.
The Highlanders, Brian Johnson and Elliott Larson from Aspen, completed 40 laps in just over 24 hours, covering more than 100 miles and more than 60,000 feet of elevation gain.
The fastest lap for the women went to Sue King of team Independence Run & Hike in 33:28.
