GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — Young artists from several Glenwood Springs schools will be showcasing their talents during the 20th annual All Glenwood Kids Fine Arts Week.
The show runs Monday through Friday at Glenwood Springs High School, with musical events each evening and an all-ages art show opening Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. in the auxiliary.
“We do this every year for a couple of reasons,” GSHS art teacher Jack Niswanger said. “First, it gives the kids of sense of gratification for what they do. It’s also a good way for the community to see what goes on in the art department.
“We have a large body of work this year, and a lot of effort went into it,” he said. “I’m always struck by how impressive an array of work there is at the end of the school year.”
The show will include upwards of 2,000 pieces of artwork. High school students will be exhibiting works in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, pottery, jewelry, stained glass, sewing, woodwork and graphic design.
In addition to artwork by GSHS students, the show will also include the works of students from Sopris and Glenwood Springs elementary schools, and from St. Stephen’s School.
The Glenwood Springs Art Guild will be on hand as well with information about student scholarships it will be awarding to college-bound students.
Niswanger said he has a number of his senior students who plan to continue their art studies in college.
Another of GSHS’s art teachers, John Linn, said the younger students are also quite talented.
“Several of my freshmen are already doing some advanced work,” he said.
The Roaring Fork School District’s showcase of young artists continues May 18-20 with the Roaring Fork High School Annual Art Show in Carbondale. The show will take place in the auxiliary gym, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 18; 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19; and 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 20.
Basalt High School also just concluded its student art show. One BHS student, Kevin Newland, is planning to attend the prestigious art school Pratt Institute in New York City next year, according to BHS art teacher Tish McFee.
“He was also accepted into his first juried show at Anderson Ranch,” McFee said. “We had six kids involved in the Aspen Art Museum’s young curators program, and seven of our kids were accepted into the Young Curators juried show Glithchery at the Aspen Art Museum.”
