NEW CASTLE, Colorado — The Riverside Middle School combined seventh- and eighth-grade Honor Choir brought home top honors from the statewide Music Festival Competition, held at Elitch Gardens in Denver on May 15.
The “Viking Voices,” as they are known, placed first overall, scoring 95 out of 100 points from both judges, according to Riverside choir director and vocal coach Kathryn Schmidt.
“The group of students I have worked with this year are unbelievably talented, sweet, interesting, dedicated and intelligent,” Schmidt said.
The students who participated in the Honor Choir have taken choir all year and rehearsed in grade-level classes every other day. The whole group then rehearsed together a few times before concerts and competition.
To qualify for the state competition, the choir earned a 1-Superior rating, the best possible, at the state large group competition held at Grand Valley High School in Parachute earlier this spring.
“The group of students in the Viking Voices will change every year as the eighth-grade class graduates, but many of these students continue with their musical education at the high school level participating in Varsity Choir or Concert Choir,” said Schmidt, who also directs the choirs at Coal Ridge High School.
“The choirs at Coal Ridge have also done exceptionally well this year,” she said.
