Exploring North Star Open Space by water

Never floated through mountain wetlands? Then join us for this awesome event from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 17. Bring your canoe, kayak or ducky and get ready to float the gentle Roaring Fork River through some of the most important wetlands in the upper Roaring Fork Valley. Staff from Pitkin County Open Space & Trails and Roaring Fork Conservancy will give the history of James H. Smith North Star Preserve, point out wildlife, and discuss recent restoration activities along this mild two-hour float. Please dress appropriately — life jackets are required; the float will happen rain or shine, but is dependent on river flows and may be cancelled due to extremely high or low flows. English tutors needed

English In Action is looking for volunteers to work one on one with adult immigrants to help them learn English. The next training is Wednesday, June 10, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the El Jebel Center. Volunteers need no previous teaching or foreign language experience, just the desire to make an important difference in someone else’s life. Living on Tennessee Pass

Duane Cook, now of Cheyenne, will be the guest speaker at the June 3 meeting of the National Railway Historical Society at the Glenwood Railroad Museum located in the historic Rio Grande (now Amtrak) station. Mr. Cook lived at Tennessee Pass from July 1951 until they closed the station and will be presenting a video of the pass, plus train and snow operation footage and people from the pass interacting as they did each day.

The 7 p.m. meeting is free and open to the public. To reach the museum front door, go down the open stairs west of the station, then proceed to the east end of the station. Questions may be directed to 928-8721 or janandpat@sopris.net.

Donegan Road Closure

The city’s Electric Department will continue to upgrade its system on Donegan Road. Closures to Donegan Road to through traffic will begin on Monday, June 1, between Sunny Acres and Vista Drive. This section of road will be open to local traffic only. Construction hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
