Voice for the ‘unwanted’

The headlines and blog sites are now filled with indignation over the murder of Dr. Tiller, the infamous Kansas abortion doctor.

If he were alive, I would remind him (especially in the light of his role as usher in a Christian church) that the womb is a room, not a tomb, and that his own murder is just as inexcusable.

From Amnesty International we learn that in China, a protester (a hero, yes?) against forced abortion has been sent to prison camp. A Chinese pregnant mother awaits her fate in a hospital as international protests mount in her defense. U.S. Rep. Christopher Smith from New Jersey is one such voice against China’s very public policy. Countering such arguments are Bill Clinton, who defends abortion rights worldwide, and President Obama’s stand to end “unwarranted” abortion restrictions, again worldwide.

The fact is the “unwanted” are unable to wage a protest on their own behalf so some of us choose to become that voice for them. (Remember the book “The Silent Scream”?)

The fact is, life is either precious or it’s nothing.

Vote for Tom Turnbull

We are writing in behalf of Tom Turnbull, a candidate for the June 5 election. We have been using Holy Cross Electric since the 1950s and have always been impressed with its reliability, reasonable cost and quality of its board and employees.

Going back to original board members like Mela Cerise and managers like Ed Grange, Holy Cross has had an admirable string of capable, forward looking leaders. Since 2005 we’ve moved to the Excel area and have just gotten notice of another rate increase. Ugh.

Holy Cross is actively pursuing “green” alternatives and is prepared to buy the power if the hydro project goes through at the Darien Ranch in Marble. Customers can already support wind power by their own choice.

Probably the quality we all desire most in an electric company is reliability, and we believe Holy Cross is a true leader in that regard. Tom, in his years on the board, had been a thoughtful and conscientious member, open to new ideas but fully aware of keeping costs and services steady.

It seems odd that the new candidates have not even attended any of the board meetings. They are open to the public. We urge you to vote for Tom Turnbull.

Torture is justified if it keeps Americans safe

In regard to a recent letter submitted to the Post Independent regarding torture, I don’t care what our country does to terrorists if it saves American lives.

We’re at war or didn’t you liberals notice. Didn’t 3,000 men, women and children die a horrible death on Sept. 11, 2001? Didn’t Nick Berg get his head sawed off? Don’t these cowardly terrorists hide in mosques and schools and behind women and children? How many times have we read about suicide bombers blowing themselves up in crowded buses, restaurants and market places, indiscriminately killing innocent people? I don’t care if their Koran or Quaran — spell it any way you want to, their holy book — is improperly handled. These terrorists currently being held in Gitmo are the worst of the worst scum on earth. If they are harboring information we need to keep Americans safe, I say do what you have to do.
