The Town of Silt is poised to join the ranks of the fast-food nation, with the likely addition of a Subway restaurant to the town's Kum & Go service station and convenience store.
According to the town's community development director, Gale Carmoney, plans for the subway have been underway for several months and will go before the town's planning and zoning commission on July 7 for a site-plan review.
“It's something we've been discussing with the architect for quite a few months,” he explained, adding that at this point he is not expecting the project to be derailed by any unexpected problems.
Assuming the 1,400 square foot eatery gets past the P&Z, he said, the owner will be able to apply for a building permit and go to work.
Efforts to reach Megan Kring, publicist for the Kum & Go corporate headquarters in Iowa, were not successful on Wednesday.
Silt Mayor Dave Moore said of the development, “I think we're in need of a deli of that caliber. I think it will add to the attractiveness of our town.”
He noted that he knows of a number of people who work in Silt but go to Rifle for their lunch breaks, “including myself,” because of the lack of a fast-food outlet.
Moore said there are two restaurants in town that cater either to families or a slightly higher quality of dining, as well as a sandwich counter and a small deli at two convenience stores.
But with a new office about to open for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, and the town's current working population hungry for something different, he said, “I think it'd be a welcome addition.”
