Libraries are learning and entertainment institutions, not necessarily in that order, and we tend to focus on our young persons when it comes to special programs. However, most adults have a desire to keep learning and certainly want to be entertained. Thus we have introduced special programs for adults in Garfield County.

All six branches of the Garfield Public Library District offer the Adult Summer Reading Program, which awards fantastic prizes to lucky readers through July 31. The program is simple, and there are no registration or attendance requirements. Simply reading three books makes you eligible to fill out an entry card. A weekly drawing will pick one winner (in each of the six communities) for a $50 gift certificate to a local business. So when you pick up your next book remember to grab an entry card too — it could really pay off!

Each branch library has a unique set of programming and materials available. The New Castle Branch Library has developed programs aimed specifically at adults including the Digital Camera Club, hosted by photographer Scott Pope. Scott has been producing fine-art-quality photographs for a number of years now, and has a strong desire to share his knowledge and experiences with others. At these gatherings he covers basic techniques, answering questions about focus, framing the shot, exposure and so on, and then delves into the artistic side, posing challenges to the participants and making them think in greater detail about the world around them. The next meeting of the Digital Camera Club will be July 8 at 7 p.m.

A few of the Garfield County libraries have also begun hosting artist receptions. The goal, simply put, is to introduce beauty into our daily environment, and to stimulate the viewer's curiosity about the artist. At these receptions you can meet the featured artist and get the story behind the art. The next artist's reception will be held in Parachute on July 28 from 7-8 p.m. featuring the work of Jan Brieger-Scranton. Jan describes her pieces as “an expression of the images and places that I visit in the dream state, and the real world.” Her beautiful pieces are made of both man-made and natural objects, paints, papers, metals and organic materials. Brieger-Scranton's pieces are currently on display at the Parachute Branch Library.

You can find information on more adult programming by picking up a copy of the new summer edition of the Library District's newsletter, Page by Page. And if you are interested in further information on any of these topics, or are unable to attend the programs, the libraries are here to help. Each branch has books, magazines and computers available for you. So, if you are looking for photography books, art techniques, or even political memoirs please stop by your local branch today.

Charlie Ringer is assistant branch manager of the New Castle Branch Library.
