Horseshoe tourney fundraiser

The American Legion Post 100 in Carbondale will host a horseshoe tournament and barbecue on July 11th . All of the money will be donated to Mariane Maynard who was in the hospital a few months ago with a head injury. The money will help her with her hospital bills. Dragonfly Studio will be at the American Legion from noon to 4 p.m. to do family portraits for a $35 donation as well.

Fundraiser at Moe's

Fiesta Fun & Two-Punch Tuesday at Moe's Southwest Grill, 35 Market Street, Glenwood Meadows Shopping Center: Tuesday, July 14 from 4-9 p.m. Join Team Zoo Babies and Moe's for an evening of good food and crazy fun in support of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life! Missouri Heights schoolhouse rental

The Missouri Heights Schoolhouse is available for rentals, including parties, family reunions, weddings, meetings, etc.

Landfill closure notice

West Garfield County Landfill will be closed today for Independence Day. It will reopen Sunday, July 5. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week.

Rib competition

Bring your best ribs and compete against a KCBS competitor during the 36th annual Burning Mountain Festival in New Castle.

The event is July 17 with a $20 entry fee.

Meadowlands River Walk

Three walks along the Roaring Fork River and Castle Creek in the Meadowlands open space will be offered before Aspen Music Festival and school concerts. The walks will be guided by a Roaring Fork Conservancy naturalist, who will talk about the local flora and fauna. Afterwards, participants can enjoy the concerts, either by purchasing a ticket or by sitting on the lawn outside the Benedict Music Tent in Aspen.

The walks take place from 4-5:45 p.m. on July 17 and Aug. 21. They will occur rain or shine, so weather-appropriate clothing is a must. The walks are free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. Wine Makers dinner

Support the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts by attending the Wine Makers Dinner at Rivers Restaurant, at 6 p.m. July 17.

Fresh, organic Colorado wine from Jack Rabbit Hill Vineyards will be paired with a five-course gourmet meal prepared by the chefs at Rivers Restaurant.

Shred-a-thon

The Glenwood Lions Club is holding a Shred-a-thon on Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shredding will take place at the Community Bank parking lot located at 1810 Grand Avenue. The purpose of the event is to offer people a safe and secure way to dispose of any unwanted documents with personal information.

The event is open to the public, but the Lions are asking for $10 donations per office file box. The money raised will help to fund another Lions Club program, KidSight, which screens school-age children for degenerative eye disease.

People can bring any paperwork they wish to have properly disposed of including tax documents, bank statements, medical records, canceled or blank checks, credit card statements or solicitations, or personal bills.

New venue for Basalt River Day

The Basalt Chamber River Day is changing its venue and moving closer to the river. This year's River Day will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Old Pond Park.

Silt Heyday on Aug. 1

The 40th anniversary celebration is Aug. 1, with a theme of “Remembering the ‘60s,” and organizers are now looking for volunteers, parade entries and booth applicants.

This year live music will be provided by Heart of the Rockies at breakfast, The Strolling Scones in the afternoon, and regional favorite The Johnny O Band in the evening.

Forms for booth spaces and parade entries have been mailed to those who participated in previous years, and can be picked up at Silt Town Hall, 231 N. Seventh St., and anyone interested in volunteering can call 876-5801.

Water plan

The city of Glenwood Springs is currently in the process of updating its water conservation plan. For submittal of comments or information, contact the city's website at www.ci.glenwood-springs.co.us/ or contact the water department at 384-6344.

Clogging lessons

The Western Slope Stompers offer clogging lessons to beginners. The new adult class is held on Wednesdays at the Apple Tree Community Room in New Castle from 7-7:45 p.m.

Knitters and crocheters of all ages and skill levels are invited to Mountain Valley Textiles & Gifts in Glenwood Springs for a monthly social get together. Bring a project and a friend the first Thursday of every month from 4-7 p.m.
