Four seasoned and highly qualified teachers of Garfield County School District 16 in the Grand Valley schools of Parachute and Battlement Mesa were honored at the annual Teachers of the Year recognition event on April 24.
Each of the schools formed nominating committees to select the teacher in their specific building. The selected teacher was presented with a special Apple trophy and a check for $500. In addition, each school received an additional $500 that the teacher and their principal could use at their discretion.
The selected teacher recipients for 2009 are Janel Brandeberry, a kindergarten teacher with four years of experience who teaches in the Grand Valley Center for Family Learning; Jodi Rishing of Bea Underwood Elementary School, an intermediate teacher with 18 years of teaching experience; Manila Wise of St. John Middle School, who has taught middle school science for five years; and Mark Gregory, who holds a bachelor's degree in theater from the University of Northern Colorado and an ME in secondary ed./curriculum from Phoenix University. He teaches drama at Grand Valley High School.
Janel Brandeberry is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with a BA degree in early childhood education who moved to Colorado four years ago. Jodi Rushing has a BA in liberal arts/elementary psychology and and a master's degree in reading instruction with an emphasis in mathematics and science. Manila Wise, a sixth-grade science teacher who is a graduate of Regis University with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts/education, is currently six hours from completing her master's degree from Regis University. Mark Gregory is a Colorado native and was the recipient of the Gold Apple Award last year at Grand Valley High School and has been teaching for three years.
The second annual teacher awards was sponsored by the Grand Valley Educational Foundation and included a light dinner and hors d'oeuvres, along with music by Mr. Yanowitz and his band and choir.
Donations totaling $3,250 came from Alpine Bank — Battlement Mesa, B and D Developers and Wells Fargo Bank. The remaining funds were provided by the foundation and its board of directors to support the event. Linda Levine, secretary of the board of directors, organized the event and food. Ivo Lindauer, president of the foundation and the Rev. E.J. River presented the awards.
