Alleged theft puts new Aspen business on ice

For some two weeks the Powder Days ice-shaving stand has served up summer-time treats for the parched. But business came to a halt Wednesday when an ex-employee allegedly swiped the stand's $1,200 ice-shaving machine and cash drawer, only to be arrested in El Jebel early Thursday morning on suspicion of assaulting her ex-boss.

As of Thursday afternoon, Erin Justine Meehan, 26, remained incarcerated on $7,500 bond in the Eagle County jail on misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault, criminal mischief and domestic violence, according to a jail official.

Some time after midnight Thursday, she is alleged to have entered the home of one the owners of Powder Days and assaulted him. She was booked into jail at 1:30 a.m., according to an Eagle County jail official.

Meehan also is considered a suspect by the Aspen Police Department for the theft of Powder Days' ice shaving machine and cash drawer. Aspen police detective Chris Womack said the case remains under investigation.

“It sounds like she has the machine,” he said, “and she will have to return the machine or look at being arrested for theft.”

Michael Young, who co-owns the Powder Days stand along with the alleged victim of Meehan's assault, said she was fired earlier this week because of job-performance issues, which apparently precipitated her alleged misdeeds in Aspen and El Jebel.

“Outside of the realm of what happened here, I think she's a good person,” Young said.

Young said he hopes the ice shaving machine is recovered in time to open this weekend. He said business had been brisk ever since the stand opened last month.

“We've been trying to provide a place for the local kids to hang out, other than Paradise Bakery,” said Young, who also owns Radio Boardshop, located a few footsteps from Powder Days, at the corner of Galena Street and Cooper Avenue. “We've worked hard on our business.”
