New board member, principals for Re-2

RIFLE, Colorado — Elyse Hutchinson of New Castle was recently appointed to fill an open seat on the Garfield County School District Re-2 Board of Education.

She replaces long-time school board member Anne Guettler, who resigned her seat in May for personal reasons.

Hutchinson is a freelance graphic designer and has two children in Re-2 schools.

“I have been active in the schools for seven years now, and like being part of the kids' education,” Hutchinson said.

She was previously president of the PTA and was on the building accountability committee at Kathryn Senor Elementary School in New Castle.

Her school board seat will be one of three that will be up for election this November. The seats currently held by Brad Moss and Jay Rickstrew will also be up for election.

Hutchinson said she anticipates that she will formally run for the seat when the time comes. Information about qualifications and how to obtain petitions to run for the school board will be available later this month.

Meanwhile, Re-2 announced a number of new school principals for the coming year, including Shaunda Zahara-Harris, who will be principal at the new Graham Mesa Elementary School in Rifle. Information about Zahara-Harris and her background was not immediately available from the district.

Also, Carrie Close-Hassel was named the new principal at Elk Creek Elementary School in New Castle. She was formerly an academic coach at Cactus Valley Elementary School in Silt.

Close-Hassel replaces Lacey Moser, who will take over as principal at Riverside Middle School. She replaces former Riverside principal Holly Morris, who resigned the post earlier this spring.

The Roaring Fork Re-1 School District also has two seats up for election this year; those held by Basalt-area board members Michael Bair and Bob Johnson. Information about the Re-1 board election will be forthcoming as well.
