Rifle student graduates from Adams State College

Jason Dowd of Rifle was a recent graduate of Adams State College in Alamosa.

The spring commencement ceremonies were May 9.

Dowd received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration/economics.

Congressman John T. Salazar, a graduate of Adams State College in 1982, was the commencement speaker.

Chamber sports new mural

The chamber building has been decorated with a bright, new mural designed by local muralist Renick Stevenson. Local and visiting youngsters and Yampah Mountain High School students painted the mural at this year's Strawberry Days KidsFest. The artwork represents “A Chinese Celebration,” which was the theme of the 112th annual Strawberry Days Festival.

Anaya makes dean's list at Daniels College of Business

Giovanny Anaya of Glenwood Springs made the dean's list at the University of Denver Daniels College of Business for Spring Quarter of the 2008 and 2009 school year. The dean's list honors those undergraduate students who have achieved a quarterly grade point average of 3.75 or above while taking at least 15 credit hours.

The Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver is ranked among the top business schools in the world by BusinessWeek, U.S. News & World Report and the Financial Times. In 2008, it celebrated its 100th anniversary and is among the first business colleges founded in the U.S.

Pair wins big at Eagle 4-H fair

Nine-year-old Josey Morford and her 2-year-old Welsh corgi, Sprout, won a number of blue ribbons at the Eagle County 4-H Fair.

“I am very proud of the work Josey and Sprout have done. While they are a young team, they work together beautifully in all aspects of the 4-H program,” said Laura Van Dyne of The Canine Consultant LLC. “I'm sorry I missed the fair. The team was asked to do an encore run in agility so everyone could watch. It was very exciting.”

Teena , Josey's mom, is hoping for more interest in agility next year so Garfield County can have an official 4-H agility program. Dogs can be purebred or mixed, and the kids need to be at least 9 years of age. If anyone is interested please call Teena Morford at 963-5891.

Loras College announces spring 2009 dean's list

Patience A. Chiles of Glenwood springs was recently named to the Loras College Provost Cheryl Jacobsen, Ph.D., dean's list status for the 2009 spring semester. A student must earn a 3.5 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours to be recognized.

X Games next?

Jonathen King, 16, has been riding BMX bicycles competitively for three years. He's placed first and second in recent competitions in Rifle. Jonathen recently learned how to do the ultra-difficult back flip trick; to practice it, he would set up a mattress at the Rifle bike park.

Way to go Jonathen!

River Rats place 10th at World Series

The Roaring Fork River Rats ended their 2009 season by placing 10th overall at this weekend's 12U Division 2 bracket at the Triple Crown World Series in Steamboat Springs. The River Rats were finally knocked out with losses to the Loveland Hitmen (4-3) and Southern Cal (5-3).

The River Rats had four players — Andrew Bowles, Brian Burbidge, Cole Adams and Tucker Schoon — picked for the All-Star Game, which was played earlier in the week. Bowles helped bring the American League to a win with a two-run homer.

Roaring Fork Women's Triathlon Team completes Tri for the Cure

Forty-eight women from the Roaring Fork Women's Triathlon Team crossed the finish line of the Denver Tri for the Cure on Aug. 2 after completing a half-mile open water swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a five-kilometer run.

The team has been training since May, learning the fundamentals of heart-rate training, mental skills, swimming, cycling and run/walking. The women joined 3,000 triathletes at the all-female triathlon, a fundraiser for the Komen Denver Foundation, at Cherry Creek State Park.

Joyce Rankin placed first in her age division of 60-64, and coach Nancy Reinisch placed third in the cancer survivor division. Caryn Hettler was the fastest overall team member with a time of 1:26:15.

The team dedicated its season to Finish For Franklin in honor of teammate Linda Flohr and her husband, Freddie, after the tragic loss of their baby boy, Franklin.

The team was supported by the generosity of Glenwood Medical Associates, Berthod Motors, Sunlight Sports, Accelerate Human Performance Center, Jim VanMeter and a host of spouse and family volunteers.
