GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — As they crossed the Seventh Street bridge and focused on the final stretch of Sunday's Tri-Glenwood Triathlon, race participants wore a variety of looks.

Some clenched their teeth, trying desperately to hold off the hurt, as they tackled the final few blocks of the five-mile run that serves as the triathlon's third leg.

Some gazed intensely at the pavement below, as if to keep their minds off the number of remaining strides.

Some just plain stared into oblivion, as if put into a daze by the morning's rigors.

Others look completely unfazed as they power down the final stretch.

One thing they all share: Each is in the midst of a deeply personal and empowering journey, with goals tailored to their abilities.

Some want to win. Some are in pursuit of personal milestones. Some simply want to finish a triathlon.

Kallie Carpenter and Casey Vaughn fall into that first category, and win the Tri-Glenwood Triathlon is precisely what they did.

Carpenter cruised across the line first in 1 hour, 28 minutes, 15 seconds to claim the women's overall crown, and Vaughn held off a stable of highly accomplished Tri-Glenwood veterans to nail down the men's title with a time of 1:22:35.

For Carpenter, a 35-year-old Carbondale resident, it was her second straight Tri-Glenwood triumph. She held off Glenwood Springs' Jenny Barsness, who finished second and happens to be friends with Carpenter.

“We did the 24 Hours of Sunlight together last winter,” Carpenter said. “It's fun [to race against a friend]. Everyone's cheering each other on. It's more fun that way. It's not too competitive.”

That said, Carpenter clearly wanted to win, even if training and competition serves primarily as an escape from the insanity of her everyday life.

“I grew up swimming competitively, so I guess I have a little bit of that edge,” said Carpenter, whose time was topped by only five men. “But mainly, as a mom, I use it as my down time. I think of it as an hour and a half of my time. I love it.”

As for Vaughn, he used Sunday's sprint triathlon as training for an Ironman race in his native state of Oklahoma next week.

He held off second-place Brian Passenti and bronze finisher Charlie Wertheim, who owns a record six Tri-Glenwood wins.

Vaughn, 28, started dabbling in triathlons seven years ago.

“I was a gym rat for a couple years and picked up magazines,” he said. “That's how I learned about Ironman.”

He hasn't stopped dabbling since. Sunday's win marked his first Tri-Glenwood title. He finished third and fourth in his first two tries at the yearly race, which has now been held 25 times.

Passenti, too, is training for an Ironman race. He'll be heading to Arizona in November to tackle a full triathlon and its 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run.

“I've been really working at it this year,” said Passenti, a 35-year-old veteran of nine Tri-Glenwoods. “This is my third race this season.”

Passenti also had the pleasure of watching his wife finish Sunday's triathlon — her first.

“It was an altogether great day,” he said. “It was great to see a smile on her face at the end. Everyone will go home happy.”

Tri-Glenwood consists of an 825-meter swim in the Hot Springs Lodge pool, a 15-mile bike ride along Interstate 70 from the pool to Canyon Creek and a five-mile run that follows a route centered around the River Trail and Midland Avenue. The race finishes in front of Hotel Denver on Seventh Street.
