STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado — Rifle has a chance to shake up the 3A Western Slope League football scene in a big way with a trip to Steamboat Springs tonight.
Behind a devastating ground game that produced 337 yards rushing, the Bears scored their first league win against visiting Montezuma-Cortez last week.
Tonight, they'll face the cream of the 3A WSL crop.
The Sailors, ranked second in Class 3A in the latest Denver Post/9 News poll, are riding high after knocking off fellow league favorite Palisade, 28-21, last week.
University of California-bound quarterback Austin Hinder enjoyed a big performance in a big game, completing 23 of 28 passes for 259 yards and a touchdown, helping Steamboat to its first win over Palisade in two years. The Sailors are now 5-0.

Cards, Skiers set to square off
ASPEN, Colorado — Grand Valley had little problem turning away Basalt last week, beating the Longhorns, 28-7. Tonight, the Cardinals will face a much tougher test in a trip to Aspen. Both teams are 4-1. The Skiers took down Cedaredge, 42-18, last week.
Grand Valley won this matchup, 33-20, last year. But that was with a number of different players suiting up for both sides.
Defensive showdown likely between Longhorns, Rams
BASALT, Colorado — Offense likely won't be the centerpiece of tonight's battle between Roaring Fork School District Re-1 schools. Roaring Fork and Basalt, on the slate for a 7 p.m. showdown in Basalt, have combined to score 68 points so far this season at an average of 5.6 a night for the Longhorns and eight a game for the Rams.
Basalt enters Week 6 off a 28-7 loss to host Grand Valley last week, while the winless Rams were plagued by the turnover bug in a 27-15 road defeat at Gunnison.
Titans looking for a win
PEACH VALLEY, Colorado — Coal Ridge's struggles continued with last week's 49-7 loss at Olathe, home of the defending 2A state champion Pirates.Tonight, the Titans will look to revisit the win column at home against Gunnison. Coal Ridge hasn't won since a 32-6 win over Rangely back on Sept. 18.
