Nellie Lane Williams passed away on Oct. 5, 2009 at the E. Dene Moore Care Center in Rifle. Nellie was in her 98th year.
Her parents were William Frances and Laura Belle Lane who came to Colorado in 1910 in a covered wagon train from the Oklahoma Cherokee Indian Territory. Nellie was very proud of her Cherokee Indian heritage. The Lanes stopped in Hayden, Colorado where Nellie was born in a log cabin on March 30, 1911. The Lanes then moved to Western Colorado around 1915, where Dad Lane worked for several ranchers. Dad Lane then elected to homestead a section of land on Coates Creek in the Glade Park area.
Nellie was one of six children born to William Frances and Laura Belle. Nellie attended school in a one-room log cabin on Coates Creek along with brothers Gip, Dink, Hoot, and Buck and sister Dovie.
She spent her adult years in the Grand Junction area. Nellie married three times: Merle Morse of Collbran; Jay D Currie and Ray Williams of Grand Junction, all of whom preceded her in death. Nellie was a respected landscape artist who also wrote and published a brief history of her life entitled, ‘Colorado Memories.'
Nellie Williams continually said how much she cherished, and how blessed she was, to have so many good friends and family in her life.
She was preceded in death by son, Woodrow and a daughter, Patricia Currie (Bill) Nelson of Lander, Wyo.
She is survived by sons, Donald (Kathie) Currie of Silt and Jack (Karen) Morse of Colorado Springs; stepson, Raymond (Jean) Williams of Bailey Island, Maine; 18 grand children and 27 great grandchildren.
A memorial service for Nellie will be held on Oct. 24, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Callahan Edfast Mortuary, Grand Junction, Colorado.
