PRO TKD Martial Arts sweeps state forms championships

Carbondale's PRO TKD Martial Arts emerged from the Oct. 10 Everything But Sparring Championships as the top school, with its 11 members claiming 48 medals at the Denver event. That included both black belt grand championships, both colored belt grand championships and honors as the No. 1 demo team.

The Roaring Fork champion winners included Jordan Tribble of Glenwood Springs High School, who took home five gold medals and two silvers to win the championship sword in the 16-and-above black belt division.

Janet Lapin and Chris Waldmann — from El Jebel and Carbondale, respectively — tied the championship win in the 16-and-above colored belt with double golds.

Aldo Pinela, from Carbondale Middle School, was the sword winner for the 15-and-under black belt division, with three golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Alex Zavala, also a CMS student, won the 15-and-under colored belt division with four golds, a silver and a bronze.

Other winners included black belt reserve grand champion Olive Tampol, who attends Colorado Mountain College. Tampol won four golds and three silvers.

Todd Burkholder of Carbondale captured double silvers in the 15-and-under division.

The black belt reserve grand champion was Nicole Cerdenola of Roaring Fork High School. She won three golds, a silver and two bronzes.

Brianda Perea, of CMS, took home one gold, two silvers and two bronzes.

The colored belt reserve grand champion was Matthew Wampler of CMS. He received two goals and a bronze.

Nick Hunsaker of The Waldorf School claimed a gold, a silver and a bronze.

Events at the championships included traditional, creative and weapon forms, group and demo team forms and breaking.

This state championship was a qualifier for the Martial Arts Commissioners (MAC) National Championships on Nov. 21 in Florida and a fundraiser for the Colorado State Taekwondo team to represent Colorado at the U.S. Open World Championships in February.

Harvey hits hole-in-one at RVR

Chris Harvey sunk a hole-in-one at River Valley Ranch Golf Club on Sept. 27. Swinging a 9-iron, he aced the third hole from 153 yards away. Paul and Matt Harvey witnessed the shot.

Sharp Shooter Shootout

Rifle Creek Golf Course is holding the Sharp Shooter Shoot Out, a two-person scramble, on Sunday, Nov. 1.

The cost is $120 per team and the tournament is open to ladies, men's and mixed teams. The fee includes green fees and a cart.

Glenwood Springs Soccer Club registration, tryout information

Tryouts for the Glenwood Springs Soccer Club are coming up soon. All soccer players (U11-U18 divisions) interested in playing in the spring league should attend the November tryouts and register before Jan. 15.

Practice begins in March and games are played in April and May.

If currently rostered on an advanced team, attendance is not required. Younger players (4 to 10 years old) compete in the developmental division (no tryouts) and can register online.

Tryouts will be held at Gates Soccer Complex. Players should bring a copy of their birth certificate, if not previously submitted. Boys try out on Monday, Nov. 9, from 5-7 p.m. Girls try out on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 5-7 p.m. Makeup tryouts, for boys and girls, are Monday, Nov. 16, from 5-7 p.m.

Register by Jan. 15 to be sure you'll get to play. Online registration is available at www.glenwoodsoccer.org.

Banzai Run 5K is Nov. 14

The second annual Banzai Run/Walk 5K will be held in West Glenwood on Saturday, Nov. 14. The race starts on Donegan Road and runs along a scenic trail on Storm King Mountain and Mitchell Creek Road.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. on race day, with the start of the race at 9 a.m. The cost is $15, with all proceeds going to benefit the Pauline S. Schneegas Wildlife Foundation in Silt.
